The CLASSIC MAIL System line Numbering Conventions
Throughout this guide, and during the operation of the CLASSIC MAIL system,
references will be made to line numbers.
Line numbers are used to identify a
particular outside line plugged into your Merlin Control Unit. The line labeling
convention used on the Control Unit is that the line plugged into Control Unit
outside line jack A is called line A; line B is plugged into jack B, and so forth. The
CLASSIC MAIL system alters this convention slightly by referring to lines by
numbers; for example, when transferring a call to you it may say, "You have a call on
line 1." This means that you have a call on the line plugged into control unit jack A,
which is normally the first outside line button on your telephone. Table 3J shows the
CLASSIC MAIL system line numbering convention. These line designators corre-
spond to specific outside line buttons on Merlin telephones. See Figure 3K.
