BASIC FAX SERVER ADMINISTRATION
89
License management
A network client is any VSI-FAX application running on a computer with a different IP address than the fax server.
Each client must be registered as a licensed user in the VSI-FAX database to be able to connect to the fax server.
VSI-FAX licenses specify a maximum number of licensed users. When you have reached this limit and want to
register new clients, you have to reactivate the current license with a license that authorizes more users or with an
unlimited-user license.
In the same way, VSI-FAX licenses specify a maximum number of licensed ports available for hardware devices (i.e.
single-channel modems and fax boards). You cannot use more ports than the number of ports allowed by the license
otherwise VSI-FAX Fax Server will stop.
Reactivating VSI-FAX Server license
You can change the VSI-FAX license from the command shell using vfxadmin license or from VSI-FAX Server
Administration on Windows, for example, to change to a production license after an evaluation period or to increase
the number of licensed users, ports or virtual fax servers.
When you reactivate the VSI-FAX license, you need two pieces of information: Serial Number and Activation Key.
Both pieces of information are provided when you buy licenses from Esker or an Esker strategic partner.
Command line
1. Log into the fax server as user vsifax.
2. Reactivate the current license by entering the following:
vfxadmin license
You will be prompted for the new serial number and activation key, as well as the virtual servers' IP addresses
if the license includes Virtual Fax Servers. Once installed, the license table is updated with the number of
users specified by the new license activation key.
Troubleshooting licensing problems due to the number of devices used
When changing licenses, (ex. when going from a VSI-FAX evaluation license to a production license) you must
ensure that you are not using more ports for hardware devices than the number of ports authorized by the new
license.
For example, you are using 28 ports on a VSI-FAX Server running with an evaluation license authorizing an unlimited
number of ports and you purchase a production license authorizing only 24 ports.
In such cases, you must delete the devices you no longer want to use before entering the new license so as not to
exceed the number of ports allowed by the new license.
If you do not delete any devices, VSI-FAX Fax Server will stop when you enter the new license and you will not be
able to start it again until you have deleted devices.
On Windows, when trying to restart the VSI-FAX Fax Server service from the Windows Services panel, you get the
following error message:
Windows could not start the VSI-FAX Fax Server on Local Computer. For more
information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact
the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1.
The error message written in the VSI-FAX Fax Server logs is as follows:
30 devices exceed license max of 10
Please install a valid license or delete exceeding devices exiting
To solve this problem, you must delete some devices from the system. Note that only hardware devices (i.e. single-
channel modems and fax boards) are licensed. Deleting a loopback (lb), a sendmail (sm), or a Fax on Demand
Connector (FoDC) device will not decrease the license count.
