FAX FUNDAMENTALS
69
The advantage to this approach is that it is very inexpensive because you do not have to purchase any additional
telephone numbers or services from your telephone company.
Routing received faxes
You can simplify departmental routing scheme to cover individual fax users. This is how it works.
Thus far, our discussions have assumed that each fax device can only answer one incoming fax telephone number.
This is not exactly true. Contiguous blocks of Direct Inward Dial (DID) telephone numbers can be purchased from
most telecom providers. One important feature of these DID numbers is that they are answered from a single trunk
telephone line. Therefore, if you connect a fax device to a DID trunk line, that single fax device can actually answer
more than one incoming fax telephone number.
DID numbers are typically comprised of a contiguous block of one hundred numbers beginning with xxx-xx00 and
ending with xxx-xx99. If a DID number is assigned to each fax user, then VSI-FAX can strip off the last four digits of
the incoming fax number and use that information to route the fax to the appropriate user's inbox as shown in the
following figure:
When using a Class 2/2.0 fax modem or a Dialogic Brooktrout TR1034 Analog fax board to receive faxes, you can
also route received faxes based on DTMF digits detection.

Sending email messages
VSI-FAX can send two general types of email messages:
The email submitted to send faxes when using the sm FIM (Send Mail).
The email notifications (delivery status or reception notifications).
An email gateway is used to send those email messages. VSI-FAX connects to this email gateway and
communicates with it using the SMTP protocol (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).
VSI-FAX Server can connect to any mail server as long as the SMTP protocol is enabled. However, depending on the
email gateway, you could have some problems when sending emails. In this case, refer to Emails problems
