Configuring the Virtual Fax Server
To use the VFS software you must install the VFS software and provide its IP address or DNS Name on the full
server. Check that the full server license supports Virtual Fax Server. Verify the hostname to which the VFS directs
VSI-FAX commands. Check that the users who will be submitting VSI-FAX commands from the VFS are registered
as licensed users on the full server.
To configure a Virtual Fax Server:
1. Install the Virtual Fax Server (VFS) software on a supported platform.
2. Check that the installed VSI-FAX license supports Virtual Fax Server by issuing the vfxadmin license -l
command. Check the value for the number of Virtual Fax Servers supported (num vfs). If this is equal to 0 ,
you must contact your Esker Sales Representative and buy a new VSI-FAX license.
3. Edit the VSI-FAX license on the fax server by issuing the vfxadmin license command and entering the
serial number, activation key, and IP address of the VFS machine(s) when prompted.
4. Verify that the hostname parameter in the vsifax.ini file on the Virtual Fax Server is set to the IP address
or hostname of the full fax server.
The VSI-FAX commands issued on the VFS machine are directed to the server named by the Hostname
parameter in the vsifax.ini file. You can check which hostname the commands are currently directed to by
issuing the
vfxstat -W command. The response from vfxstat -W will have the format user@hostname. If the
hostname is incorrect, modify the Hostname parameter in the vsifax.ini file. You can override the hostname
that the commands are directed to by adding the -H <hostname or IP> switch to the command line.
5. Verify that the users who will submit faxes from the VFS machine to the VSI-FAX server are licensed users.
Any user who issues VSI-FAX commands from the VFS machine, other than the vsifax or root user, must be a
licensed user on the VSI-FAX server. You can do any of the following to determine if a user is currently
licensed:
Issue the vfxadmin user -l command on the VSI-FAX server.
Issue the vadmin user -l command on the Virtual Fax Server and check the value in the Lic
column.
Look to see if the Licensed check box under the General tab of the User icon in the VSI-FAX Server
Administration tool is checked.
Notes
A version three VFS can work with a version four VSI-FAX full server if the vsinet process is running on the VSI-
FAX server. However, the vsinet process is not available on versions above V4.2.1 B304 .
A version four VFS cannot work with a version three VSI-FAX full server.
If you have two VSI-FAX servers, you can use the license from each VSI-FAX server to make the servers into virtual
fax servers of each other. To make a VSI-FAX server, called server1, into a virtual fax server of another VSI-FAX
server, called server2, provide the IP address of server1 in the license table of server2, and then provide the IP
address of server2 in the license table of server1. For this, use the vfxadmin license command on both servers.
