Overheating is a potentially serious condition because the excessively high temperatures can lead to physical
drivefailureandcontrollermalfunction.
Overheating usually results from inadequate air circulation around the enclosure
inAdequAte Air circulAtion
AircirculationaroundtheASUSDS300fG2enclosuremightbeamorecomplexproblem.Usethethermometer
iconstohelpyoulocatethespecichotspot.Checkfortheseconditions:
• Accumulated dust or objects blocking the fans
• Less than a minimum of 13 cm (5 inches) space between the back of the enclosure and the wall or other
object
• Ambient temperature above 35°C (95°F) where the subsystem is operating
• Failed Cooling Unit
To cool down an enclosure:
• Correctanyproblemsidentiedabove.
• Poweritdownandletitsitforanhourorlonger.

IfaCoolingUnitmustbereplaced,donotremovethefailedunituntilareplacementunitisavailable.Aholeon
the backplate created by a missing Cooling Unit affects air circulation which will cause controller units to overheat
andshutdown.IfareplacementCoolingUnitisnotavailable,leavethefailedunitinplaceuntiloneisavailable.

Important
IntheeventofaCoolingUnitfailure,DO NOT remove the failed unit until there is a replacement
availableandonhand.AsinglefunctioningCoolingUnitisadequateforcoolingthesystemas
longasthefailedCoolingUnitremainsinplace.Removingthefailedunitwithoutreplacingitwill
adverselyaffectairowwithintheenclosureresultingincriticaloverheatingandshutdownofthe
enclosure.
Power SuPPlIeS
ASUS DS300f G2 subsystems are equipped with redundant power supplies. The advantage of N+1 power
suppliesisthatshouldonefail,theothercontinuestopowerthesubsystemuntilthefaultyonecanbereplaced.
ThesubsystemiscapableofoperationonNpowersupplies.
Thepowersuppliesarehot-swappable,meaningyoucanleavethesubsystemrunningwhenyoureplacethe
badone.Becareful,however,toremovethefaultypowersupplyandnotthegoodone,orthesubsystemcomes
toanimmediatestopandyourdataisunavailableuntilthesubsystemispoweredandbootedagain.
Power fAn fAilure
IntheASUSDS300fG2subsystems,thepowersupplyfansareusedforcoolingthepowersupply.Whena
powersupplyfanfails,youmustreplacethepowersupply.

batterIeS
The Cooling Units in the ASUS DS300f G2 subsystem use a battery for backup power to protect data in the
cache.Shouldapowerfailureoccur,thebatteryenablesthecachetoholddataupto72hours.Thebattery
rechargesduringnormalsubsystemoperation.
Inmostcases,installingareplacementbatterycorrectsamarginalorfailedcondition.Thebatteryislocated
insidetheCoolingUnithousing.Toreplaceabattery,rstreplacetheCoolingUnitwiththebatterythatneedsto
