Stage Seven:
Written Expression
The Stage Seven learner works toward mastery of writing skills, moving from
letter and sound association to full independent composition.
Assessing Stage Seven Skills
In Stage Seven assessment activities, the learner builds words, sentences,
and stories. With Stages’ text-to-speech capability, learners can hear what
they have typed immediately. The accessible on-screen keyboard allows all
learners to write.
Stage Seven assessment activities include:
3 Building Words: learners copy customizable word lists and type
high-frequency and rhyming words.
3 Building Sentences: learners choose words from a word wall, edit
ready-made or custom sentences with errors (spelling, capitalization,
pronouns, noun-verb agreement, homonyms), and type their own
sentences (teacher customizable).
3 Building Stories: learners write stories about pictures
(photos provided or import your own).

Stage Six:
Functional Learning
The Stage Six learner is ready to explore the world around him and begins to
connect academic and social skills to become more independent.
Assessing Stage Six Skills
The assessment activities use stories and scenes of real people and their
activities. Each story connects to five life skills. The connection between the
stories and the questions relating to them make for a meaningful evaluation.
Stage Six assessment activities include:
3 five life skills: telling time, using money, dressing appropriately,
interpreting signs, and understanding functional use of objects
3 real-life stories: going to a birthday party, going on a trip, renting
a video, working at a nursing home, and playing in a softball game
