Stage Four:
Early Concepts
The Stage Four learner is now ready to explore beginning academic skills and
show what he or she understands. At this Stage, early childhood or
Kindergarten content is assessed.
Assessing Stage Four Skills
At Stage Four, learners aren’t asked to do math or read words, but to show
they are ready for these skills. At this Stage, learners build the foundation on
which the rest of their academic journey depends.
Stage Four assessment activities include:
3 Shape identification
3 Color identification
3 Math Readiness: number identification, counting, spatial relations,
estimating size, and patterns
3 Reading Readiness: identifying letters and their sounds

Stage Five:
Advanced Concepts and
Communication
The Stage Five learner expands basic reading and math skills. By Stage Five,
the learner has shown that she is capable of learning academic content and
is ready to continue along an academic path.
Assessing Stage Five Skills
These research-based activities address key areas of academic learning and
cover a wide range of skills. Stage Five learners may also be practicing writ-
ing at Stage Seven or functional skills at Stage Six.
Stage Five assessment activities include:
3 Reading: alphabetization, rhyming words, Dolch sight words and
high-frequency words in context
3 Math: charts and graphs, number facts, word problems, measurement
(geometry), fractions
3 Problem Solving: tic-tac-toe for 1–2 players, number-guess game,
word games, logic puzzles
