Chapter 3 Fault signalling
3.1 Introduction
This chapter describes how maintenance personnel or system managers are acquainted of faults
existing in the DCT1800-GAP system. Faults are signalled to the outside world in the following ways:
1. General alarm
2. System screen of cordless system manager
3. Individual user complaints
4. Common user complaints
Furthermore LEDs and the service display of the cordless phone are discussed. Although they cannot
be taken as fault signalling devices, they can help diagnosing faults.
3.2 General alarm
When the CPU has classified a fault as ‘Service’ (hard faults), a general alarm will be raised, see
paragraph
2.2. Upon a general alarm, a general alarm signal will be activated and a fault report is
written in the service table, which can be read out by CSM. The fault report indicates the type of fault,
type of board, location and time and date.
The local system manager or maintenance engineer is informed about a general alarm in two different
ways:

The general alarm signal from CPU is routed via the general alarm cable to the SCB or MCCB
(depending on the type of cabinet) where it activates a general alarm relay. Via this make/break relay
contact, a lamp or a sounder or any other alarm device can be activated. The alarm signalling can be
cleared by the command: System-Reset alarm
‘System service required’
When the PC runs the cordless system manager software, a pop-up window containing the message
‘System service required’ appears on the PC screen as soon as the general alarm is activated. If CSM
is started after the occurrence of a general alarm, the pop-up window will not appear in CSM. The
general alarm signal is then the only warning.
3.3 System screen of cordless system manager
By the system screen it is possible to check the status of a system board and its peripheral circuits.
Checking this state may be done to verify the fault report from the service table or to check proper
connection of base stations after installation.
