Chapter 2 Test and maintenance software
2.1 Introduction
The DCT1800-GAP system has a powerful Test and Maintenance (T&M) module incorporated in the
system software. This software module regularly tests the entire system to locate possible faults in
an early stage and to isolate the faulty circuits, thus minimizing the reduction in system service and
to generate subsequent error messages and alarms. This chapter describes the functions of the test
and maintenance software which are:
• Error handling (paragraph 2.2)
• Testing (paragraph 2.3)
• Resetting (paragraph 2.4)
Paragraph 2.2 gives an explanation of how T&M diagnosis, verifies and eliminates faults and makes
up a fault report.
For a good understanding of this, the following shall be noted (see figure 1):
• Board controllers (BC).
Board controllers are micro-processors, which control all communication between board and
CPU. The SPU, SPU-S, LTU, CLU and the CLU-S have 1 board controller, the DTU and the SLU
have 2 board controllers and the CPU has no board controller.
• Peripherals (P1..P8).
Each board, except for the CPU, has a number of peripherals (8), i.e. a number of identical circuits,
each of them interfacing a single device. An LTU has 8 peripherals, interfacing 8 PBX-lines. An
SPU and SPU-S has 8 peripherals P1.. P8 to handle 8 calls. For CLUs and CLU-Ss the actual
peripherals are the base station controllers in the base station, called remote cell controller (RCC).
The SLU is an SPU-S combined with a CLU-S on one board each with its own board controller
and its own board address. The SLU has the same peripherals as an SPU-S and a CLU-S
combined on the board. The DTU board has no peripherals but contains two complete identical
circuits each controlled by there own board controller. The board has therefore also two board
addresses. The CLU, CLU-S, SPU, SPU-S and SLU peripherals are controlled by micro-
processor.
