Base stations are connected to the CLU, CLU-S and SLU via an MDF by 2, 3 or 4 twisted pair cables.
The maximum permissible length depends on the wire size and the number of pairs used between
MDF and base station. The CLU/MDF cable contains only one Express Powering Pair (EPP), but may
be doubled on the MDF. The length of this cable may be neglected. The 8-pin RJ45 connector of the
data/power inlet on the base station is provided with only one EPP. If two EPPs must be connected
this can be done by using a standard RJ45-to-screw adapter or by using the EPP input of the second
data/power inlet.
Note:
When using both data/power inputs for powering, note the polarity of the two power pairs because
the two power (EPP) inputs of the base station are interconnected in the base station.
5.3.1 Power transformer powering
A power transformer can supply power to one modular cabinet (see figure 11). The power transformer
is a suitable powering method for those cases where PBX power is not available and where the number
of base stations per cabinet is relatively small. When a battery back-up is required, the power
transformer can be connected to an UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply).
Fig. 11 Modular cabinets powered by transformers
The transformer supplies 230 W/48 Vdc. The rectifier dissipates 20 W and the cabinet with the system
boards may use 50 W at the maximum, leaving 160 W available for base stations (see figure
12).
Depending on the cable length the transformer can power a single cabinet and 16 to 32 base stations
(32 is the theoretical number for cables of 0 m long). With an average of 24 per cabinet still a 96 base
station system can be built with 4-cabinets.
Any additional base stations can be powered by an external source via the ‘PW-EXT’ connection on
the MCCB. When using a modular cabinet with revision R2 five extra CLUs, CLU-Ss or SLUs can be
connected, which equals 40 more base stations.
