Locate the base stations such that it can ‘see’ as much as possible of the area to be covered or
such that there are as few obstacles as possible between the base station and the area to be
covered.
Locate the base station strategically: for example, not on a large concrete pillar in the middle of
a hall because you will then have little coverage behind the pillar.
Mount a base station on a wall containing a window; site the base station with its antennas in
front of the window or at least such that the base station can ‘look’ outwards and can see as much
as possible.
Always look at the exact position where the base station will be sited because during the site
survey the base station is (almost) never placed in exactly the same position.
It is possible that precisely at the exact location the wall has a somewhat different structure or there
is an obstacle (for example, a ventilation shaft) which was not a problem during the site survey.
Always keep the necessary traffic handling capacity in mind during the site survey. How many
people there are in a particular department, how often people call on average and how long
people call on average. A standard rule of thumb for this ratio is one base station for 27 people
with 100mErlang per user (see chapter on traffic calculation). If you are dealing with, for example,
a purchase department, the ratio will quickly change. Talk this over with the client.
Try to find out what the position is with internal moves and building alterations. Every company
experiences a certain amount of change which is an ongoing process. You can take account of
this in the meantime during the site survey (from a location and a capacity perspective). A good
example of this is the canteen.
Always measure the coverage obtained on the floor above and below the floor where your base
station is sited. You will usually have some form of radiation to the adjoining floors which you can
also make use of.

Ensure that during the actual installation of a base station, the base station is given an extra length
(5-10 metres) of cable because it is possible that the base station location is not ideal and it will have
to be moved for one reason or another.
