Typically, two shear bolts connect the auger to the auger shaft of your snow blower. They
feature specially designed grooves, allowing them to snap if there’s too much torque.
This prevents damage to the gear case and auger shaft. Occasionally a foreign object may
enter the auger/impeller housing and jam the auger, breaking shear bolts which secure the
auger to the shaft. This allows the auger to turn freely on the shaft preventing damage to
the gear drive. Shear bolts prevent these things from damaging your snow blower. Shear
pins are designed to snap when there's too much torque so the gear case and auger shaft
do not experience any damage.
The Ariens shear bolts are established by Ariens’ engineers with intimate knowledge of
our applications and auger gear box capabilities. These material, process, and
dimensional specifications ensure high uniformity and accuracy so the shear bolts rupture
at the designed load limits every time.
Every lot of our shear bolts is tested for compliance to our shear specifications and
uniformity standards using Ariens proprietary test equipment and procedures. This level
of quality assurance is essential to providing the highest level of protection for our
customers’ auger gear boxes.

For Replacement:
1. Align shear bolt holes in auger with shear bolt holes in the shaft
2. Drive shear bolt through hole (if shear bolt was broken this will drive remaining part
from shaft).
3. Secure shear bolt with nut.
