Nowthatyou’veselectedasuitableflyingareayou’rereadytofly!Andwhenmakingyour
firstflightswesuggestfollowingthesesteps:
TherearetwowaystogettheP‐51DMustang350intotheair,thefirstwaybeingto
‘hand‐launch’theairplane.Thiscanbeaccomplishedbyholdingthefuselageofthe
model(justbehindthewing)betweenyourfingersandthumbwiththewingslevel
(relativetothe
horizonandtheground)andwiththenosepointedintoanywind
(ALWAYSHAND‐LAUNCH/TAKEOFFANDLANDWITHTHENOSEPOINTEDINTOANY
WIND!).Then,raisetheleft‐hand/throttlesticktothehighest/full‐powerpositionand
‘throw’themodelforwardwiththenoseleveltoorjustslightlyabovethe
horizon.
Aftertheairplaneleavesyourhandfocusonkeepingthewingslevelandthenose
pointedintothewindwhilecontinuingtoclimbtoasafealtitude.
IMPORTANTNOTE:DONOThand‐launchtheairplanewiththenoseangledtoohigh
(morethan2–4degrees)abovethehorizon.Also,donotattempttoclimb/gain
altitudewiththenoseoftheairplaneangledupwardmorethanapproximately
20–30degreesabovethehorizon,oratlessthanfullpower,otherwise
theairplane
mayloselift,‘stall’andcrash.
ThesecondwaytogettheairplaneintotheairistoperformaRiseOffGround(R.O.G.)
takeofffromasmooth,levelsurface(suchasasphaltorshortgrass).Settheairplane
onthetakeoffsurfacewiththenosepointedintoanywindthenraisetheleft‐
hand/throttlestickto
thehighest/full‐powerposition.Keepthenosepointedintothe
windbyusingruddercontrol,andwhentheairplanereachesflyingspeeditwillslowly
riseoffthegroundoryoucanpullbackslightlyontheright‐handstick(‘up’elevator)
tohelpthemodelriseofftheground.
Andagain,donotattempttoclimb/gain
altitudewiththenoseoftheairplaneangledmorethanapproximately20–30
degreesabovethehorizon,oratlessthanfullpower,otherwisetheairplanemay
loselift,stallandcrash.
Afterhand‐launch/takeofffocusonkeepingtherateofclimbsmoothandsteady,the
wingslevelandthenosepointedintoanywinduntilreachinganaltitudeof
approximately150–250feethigh.Higherisevenbetteraslongasyoucanstillseethe
airplaneclearlybutkeeptheairplane
atanaltitudeanddistancethatallowsyoutime
toreactandalsomakesitpossibletoknowtheexactorientationoftheairplanesoyou
canalwaysrespondaccordingly.
Atthedesiredaltitudeyoucanleveltheairplaneoffbypushingforwardslightlyonthe
right‐handstick(‘down’elevator)untiltheairplaneisflyinglevel.Then,reducethe
left‐hand/throttlestickposition/powertoapproximately1/2to2/3forcruiseflight.
