Configuring Packet Filters (MAC Filters)
MetroE nodes can filter packets based upon the MAC (Media Access Control) address (also called
‘‘physical address’’) of the device sending the packets. A MAC address is a 48-bit number
represented by 12 hexadecimal digits that uniquely identifies the manufacturer and the device. On
Arcwave ARCXtend MetroE radios, each wired Ethernet port and the radio port has a MAC
address.
You can configure specific Ethernet ports to either deny or permit access to the mesh for traffic
coming from specific devices (identified by the devices’ MAC addresses). You cannot both deny
and allow access to specific MAC addresses. The number of MAC addresses you can filter is
limited only by the radio’s available memory. By default, packet filtering is turned off.
WARNING: Use of the ‘Allow’ MAC address filter can cut off management access to the MetroE
mesh. The ‘Allow’ function only permits explicitly identified MAC addresses to pass the radio. If
the MAC address of the ARCView Pro Server host machine is not included, access is denied. Many
enterprise networks use Ethernet switches; if the MAC address of the switch port connected to the
radio is not included, access is denied. If the wired connection is moved from one port to another,
access will be denied.
