Mac Pro (8x) Take Apart — General Information 15
Power Supply Fan
Fully removing the power supply is a preliminary step for removing the power supply fan. The
simplied procedure for removing the power supply therefore simplies removal of the power
supply fan.
Processor Heatsink Cover
When removing the heatsink cover, you no longer have to make room by removing the memory
cage screws and sliding the memory cage toward the back of the computer. The heatsink cover is
held in place with tabs and magnets and comes o easily without any tools.
Front Fan Assembly
The front fan assembly is held in place by two screws: one at the top rear of the assembly that
mounts the assembly to the logic board and a new screw at the bottom front of the assembly.
Once these screws are removed, the front fan assembly can easily be lifted out of the enclosure.
Memory Cage with Rear Fan
The only parts that must be removed before removing the memory cage are the top and bottom
memory cards, any PCI Express card installed in slot 1, and the processor heatsink cover. The rear
fan collapses into the cage, which simplies removal of the cage and fan. In addition, the rear fan
can be removed from the memory cage and is therefore a separate, orderable part.
Processor Heatsinks and Processors
A special coating that helps manage the temperature of the computer comes applied to the
underside of the heatsink and the top of the processor. As a result, several new guidelines are
necessary for handling the heatsink and processor.
Logic Board
Eleven screws secure the logic board to the enclosure. Previous Mac Pro congurations used
eight screws.
Bluetooth Antenna Board and Cable
Because the Bluetooth antenna board cable runs under the logic board, you must remove the
logic board before removing the antenna board and cable.
Parts Requiring Enclosure Replacement
The following are not separate, orderable parts. To replace them, you must replace the enclosure.
