If you are installing Mac OS X for the first time, follow the onscreen instructions to set up Mac OS X after installation finishes. When you set up Mac OS X, you create a user account. Be sure to remember the name and password you give this user account because you will use it in the future.

Breeze through your email. With a sophisticated junk mail filter, Mail let’s you get to the email that’s important to you. To find your email, search all your mailboxes at one time. Keep it together. Address Book stores all of your contact information. Send address cards to others in iChat and Mail messages. Tame the Web.

Add a “smiley” to your message for the fun of it. To use your picture in iChat messages, drag a picture to your card in Address Book. Pictures show who you’re chatting with.

To start a chat, select each person in your Buddy List that you want to join the chat, then choose Invite To Chat from the Buddies menu. After you start a chat, you can add more friends in the same way. Mail shows junk email using a color and an icon.

You can store as many phone numbers, email addresses, and instant message addresses as you need for each person. You can also include the person’s birthday. To select the picture you want to appear when you chat, drag the picture to your address card. Use Sherlock 3 to find local businesses, such as restaurants.

Select the disk, folder, or network server where you want to search, type what you’re looking for in the Search field, and press Return. The list shows the items that match your search. Select an item in the list to see where it’s located. Double-click an item to open it or drag to move it.

To help you see the screen better, you can zoom in or switch to white-on-black display. To help you control your computer, use Mouse Keys to move the pointer, Sticky Keys to press groups of keys, and Full Keyboard Access to select items. You can also control your computer using spoken commands and have text on the screen spoken to you.

If you need to update your computer’s firmware, do so before you install Mac OS X. For the latest Firmware Updates, visit the Apple software updates Web site: asu.info.apple.com You can erase the destination disk when you install Mac OS X. Select the disk and click Options, then click “Erase and Install.

If you start Install Mac OS X but want to quit without installing the software, choose Quit from the Installer menu, then press the mouse button or trackpad button to eject the CD when your computer restarts. Your computer will start up using the last system you were using. For more information about restarting your computer, see the documentation that came with it.
034-2156-A-JaguarBook 6/25/02 5:06 PM Page 14 Internet Setup Information If your computer is on a network or you want to use an existing ISP or .Mac membership, you need your existing networking information to set up Mac OS X. This information may be available on your computer. If you can’t find the information or don’t know it, contact your Internet service provider (ISP), system administrator, AirPort network administrator, or the person who administers your computer.

Mac OS X is set up to log in automatically using the user account that you created when you set up Mac OS X. If automatic login is turned off, you must enter a user account name and password to log in. Make sure you are typing the user account name and password with the same capitalization and punctuation that you used originally. You want to turn off automatic login.
034-2156-A-JaguarBook 6/25/02 4:55 PM Page 17 Using Mac OS X You want to update Mac OS X. You can’t quit an application. Periodically, Apple releases updates to Mac OS X and other software. Software Update is set up to check for updates automatically once a week. To check immediately for updates, open the Software Update pane of System Preferences and click Update Now. If you can’t quit an application, choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select the application in the list, and click Force Quit.
034-2156-A-JaguarBook 6/25/02 4:55 PM Page 18 Advice About Connecting to the Internet You cannot connect using your internal modem. You cannot connect to an AirPort network. Make sure your modem is connected to the telephone line and that you have entered the correct information in the Network and Internet panes of System Preferences. Make sure AirPort is turned on. Choose Turn Airport On from the AirPort status menu, then select a network. Check the signal level to see if it’s strong enough.

If you are using Mac OS 9 and want to start up using Mac OS X, open the Startup Disk control panel. Click the triangle next to the disk name where you have Mac OS X installed. Select your Mac OS X system and click Restart. To start up using Mac OS 9, open System Preferences and click Startup Disk.
