167Chapter 10 Managing Server Information
If you upgraded your server from Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard, the application
rewall may be active. You need to turn it o in the Security pane of System
Preferences before you can manage the IP rewall with the Security pane of Server
Preferences.
Your server’s rewall and VPN service can both allow access to services from outside
your local network. The dierence is that VPN service requires authentication for
access, but access allowed through the rewall doesn’t require authentication. If VPN
service is on, you may not need to expose some services to the Internet through your
rewall. For example, you might set the rewall to expose only your web services to the
Internet so that the public can view your website. Your server’s users can access other
services—le sharing, address book, iCal, iChat, and mail—through a VPN connection.
Checking Server Logs
Use the Logs pane of Server Preferences to view the logs kept by the Mac OS X Server
software components as they provide services. These logs include the messages you
see in alert dialogs, plus messages you won’t see anywhere else about routine actions,
warnings, and errors. If you’ve received an error message in a dialog, a log may show
additional detail about the issue.
