Chapter 16 Mix a project 519
Automate groups
When you automate your mix functions (volume, pan, mute, and so on), any channel strip
group member can act as the mix automation master for that group. When you use that group
member to write an automation parameter value, it’s also written for the other group members,
depending on their automation mode.
The data is written individually for each channel strip. As a result, you can disable the group later
without aecting the automation of any group member, and you can edit or change channel
strips individually when they are removed from the group.
For full details about automation, see Automation overview.
Surround panning in the Mixer
You can mixdown in several surround formats, even if your audio hardware oers only two
outputs. Because it would be dicult to mix or record in surround format without being able
to hear the result, it’s best not to select this option if you’re monitoring or mixing through
stereo speakers. All audio, instrument, and aux channel strips can be individually set to dierent
surround formats.
Surround panning is available when Surround is selected in the Advanced
preferences pane.
Set a channel strip’s output to surround
m Click-hold the channel strip’s Output slot, then choose Output > Surround from the
pop-up menu.
The Surround Panner control replaces the Pan knob. The loudspeakers are represented by dots,
and the pan position is indicated by a green dot that can be dragged.
For full details about using the surround feature, see Logic Pro X surround overview.
