Record multiple MIDI input devices and audio simultaneously
You can record multiple MIDI input devices simultaneously, each device representing a
unique performance and triggering different sounds, on multiple software instrument
tracks at the same time you record multiple audio sources. You need to configure each
MIDI input device that you are recording to transmit on a unique MIDI channel. Consult the
documentation of your MIDI input device for information on how to change its MIDI output
channel.
Before you start recording, make sure you create tracks for each instrument you want
to record and connect a music keyboard to your computer. Also, follow the procedures
outlined in Before recording audio in Logic Pro.
Recording multiple MIDI input devices simultaneously to multiple software instrument
tracks is only possible when Show Advanced Tools is selected in the Advanced preferences
pane.
1. In Logic Pro, choose Project Settings > Recording > “Auto demix by channel if multitrack
recording.” For more information about Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording,
see Recording settings in Logic Pro.
2. Click the Record Enable button in the track header of each track you want to record
to. Each clicked Record Enable button turns red to indicate that the track is ready for
recording.
3. In the Track Inspector for each software instrument track, choose a unique MIDI channel
for each track using the MIDI Channel pop-up menu that matches the MIDI output
channel for the MIDI input device sending to that specific track. For more information
about track parameters see Edit Logic Pro track parameters.
4. Move the playhead to the point in the ruler where you want to start recording.
5. Click the Record button in the control bar (or press R) to start recording.
Recording begins after the predefined count-in.
6. Use each MIDI input device to record software instrument parts, and start singing or
playing instruments to record audio.
7. Click the Stop button in the control bar (or press the Space bar) to stop recording.
Use step input recording in Logic Pro
Step input allows you to insert MIDI notes when you’re not recording in real time. You can
use step input to create note runs that may be too fast for you to play or to replicate sheet
music that’s too difficult for you to play.
You can use one or more of the following for step input:
Musical Typing keyboard
Step Input keyboard
MIDI keyboard
The Step Input Keyboard is available only when Show Advanced Tools is selected in the
Advanced preferences pane.
