Conguration proles
A conguration prole is an XML le you use to distribute conguration information to Apple
devices. Conguration proles automate the conguration of settings, accounts, restrictions,
and credentials. They can be installed through a mail message attachment, downloaded from a
webpage, or installed on iOS devices with Apple Congurator. If you need to congure a large
number of iOS devices, or just prefer a hands-o over-the-air deployment model, you can deliver
conguration proles through MDM.
Conguration proles that contain certicate and Wi-Fi payloads can also be installed on
Apple TV. For more information, see the Apple Support article How to install a conguration
prole on Apple TV.
Conguration proles can be encrypted and signed, which lets you restrict their use to a specic
Apple device and prevents anyone from changing the settings that the prole contains. An MDM
administrator can also mark a prole as being locked to the device, so once installed, it can be
removed only by wiping the device of all data or, optionally, by entering a password.
With the exception of passcodes, users can’t change the settings provided in a conguration
prole. Accounts that are congured by a prole, such as Exchange accounts, can be removed
only by deleting the prole.
For more information, see Conguration Prole Key Reference.
Mobile device management (MDM)
Overview
iOS and OS X support for MDM allows IT to securely congure and manage scaled Apple device
deployments across their organizations. To accomplish this, iOS and OS X have a built-in MDM
framework that lets third-party MDM solutions wirelessly interact with Apple devices. This
lightweight framework was designed for Apple devices, and is powerful and scalable enough to
congure and manage all the iOS, OS X, and Apple TV devices within an organization.
