Chapter 2 Deployment models 11
Student-owned
In higher education, students typically arrive on campus with their own iOS device. And while
not as prevalent, in some K-12 institutions, students bring their own iOS devices to school.
In this model, iOS devices are set up and congured by the student or a parent. In order to use
institutional services such as Wi-Fi, mail, and calendars, or to congure the iOS device for specic
classroom requirements, student-owned iOS devices are commonly enrolled in an MDM solution
provided by the institution. In education environments, technology such as MDM can play a role
in managing student-owned iOS devices. Access to an institution’s services acts as an incentive
for users to enroll their iOS devices in the organization’s MDM solution.
This ensures that all of the conguration settings, policies, restrictions, apps, books, and content
are deployed automatically and unobtrusively, yet remain under the control of the institution.
MDM enrollment is an “opt-in” process, so students can choose to remove management once
they complete a course, graduate, or leave the institution. Removing the management also
removes any content or services provided by the institution.
