Audio Card Descriptions
Over the years, SMARTS Broadcast Systems has used many different types of audio cards in many
different configurations. Some have used RCA unbalanced connections, others have used balanced 9- pin
D-sub connectors, while others have used a 37- pin D-sub connector. This portion of the manual should
serve as a description of each card, and how to connect audio lines to and from the SMARTCASTER.
The VP-635 and SX audio card series are manufactured by Antex Electronics in California. The ACE
card series is manufactured by Apt-X in Belfast, N. Ireland.
VP-635
This was the very first audio card used for SMARTCASTER digital audio. Primarily found in XT and
286AT class computers, this card has only an 8 KHz bandwidth and monaural capabilities. It has two
RCA input connects for right and left channel. Output is with one RCA connector.
SX-8/SX-10
This audio card is found in most SMARTCASTERS dating somewhere between early 1991 and late 1992.
It has the capability to perform 16 KHz stereo. Simultaneous Playback & Record at 10Khz mono is
achieved with just one audio card. However, with two cards, it can perform Simultaneous Playback &
Record up to 16KHz stereo. All inputs and output connections are with unbalanced RCA connectors. It is
not capable of Overlap Operations, and is limited to the ADPCM digital audio algorithm. It can perform
Shrink-and-Expand of audio for satellite Local Breaks.
SX-3
Found in mid-line models, two of these audio cards together can perform Simultaneous Playback and
Record up to 16 KHz mono. All inputs and outputs are with unbalanced 3/4” mini-phono jacks.
(Adapters between mini-phono and RCA can be obtained from SMARTS if desired.) It is not capable of
Overlap Operations or Shrink-and-Expand of audio. It uses the ADPCM digital audio algorithm.
SX-12/SX-12a
Found in mid to upper line models, this cards has the capability of Simultaneous Playback and Record up
to 16 KHz mono. When combined with the SX-7 Playback only card, it can perform Simultaneous
Playback & Record up to 16 KHZ stereo. In addition, the SX-12/SX-7 combination allows the
SMARTCASTER to perform Overlap of two audio cuts if desired. The SX-12 can perform SHRINK-and-
EXPAND of digital audio and uses the ADPCM digital audio algorithm. Connections are made with
RCA unbalanced connectors.
