Installation manual

We cannot emphasize enough how important this operation is to the SMARTCASTER. Please do
not neglect this duty.
Defrag Instructions
To run Defrag, go to the main menu of the SMARTCASTER. Reset the computer. Next, if
‘Optimization’ is on the main menu, select it. Otherwise, press u to get to the C:> prompt, and type:
DEFRAG /F and press e
Once in the Defrag program, the system asks which drive to Optimize. Highlight the correct drive and
press e. Defrag now Optimizes the drive. When finished, the program drops back to the C:> prompt.
Reset the SMARTCASTER.
Remote Record Terminal for Production
All SMARTCASTERS capable of Simultaneous Playback and Record can be equipped with a remote
terminal for production. This terminal allows someone in the production room to directly record audio
from the production board to the main SMARTCASTER unit.
Hookup is simple. Audio lines from either a distribution amp in the production room or from an output
channel on the production console need to be run from the production room to the main SMARTCASTER
unit. Second, a Comm cable, similar to the one discussed in the Jock-In-the-Box CD automation system,
needs to be run from the Remote Record Terminal to the main SMARTCASTER unit. In the event that
one production room is feeding two SMARTCASTERS for two different stations in the building, a Comm
A/B switch can be installed to switch communication from the Remote Record Terminal to either
SMARTCASTER.
Comm Cable between the Remote Terminal and main SMARTCASTER
The communications between the main SMARTCASTER and the Remote Terminal is performed via an
RS-232 line between the two machines. With this line, the two computers can talk similar to the way two
computers talk via phone lines and modems. One end of the Comm cable should be connected to Com 1,
(9 pin male), port of the Remote Record Terminal. The other end should be connected to Com 2, (25 pin
male), port of the main SMARTCASTER unit. SMARTS Broadcast Systems does provide Comm cables,
but in the event that either the cable is damaged, or one end needs to be cut off in order to run the cable,
please refer to the information in the COMMUNICATIONS CABLE section of this manual.
Audio Lines from Production to SMARTCASTER
No audio is actually recorded on the Remote Record Terminal. The terminal is just used to “tell” the
main SMARTCASTER that the audio coming from the production room is, for example, McDonalds,
starting on 02/22/94 and ending on 03/07/94, with a product code of ‘F’, and to start recording NOW!
The audio is directly recorded from the production board to the main SMARTCASTER unit. So, audio
lines need to be run between either the production room distribution amplifier or a production console
output and the main SMARTCASTER audio inputs. (On most SMARTCASTERS, it is the AUDITION
IN connection on the back of the unit. However, with 8x4 audio routers, this may change. Please refer to
that section for more information.)
Sometimes Not Just Production...
The Remote Record Terminal can also sometimes contain other programs besides just recording. It makes
a convenient place to run Music Master, (the playlist generation program for CD Automation systems), or
any log interface programs. Don’t be surprised if the main menu contains more Options than just for
recording!
