Satellite Audio
Satellite Network audio is essentially unprocessed by the SMARTCASTER, but it is switched by relays in
order to mute audio during a local commercial Break. For systems with just one satellite service, wire the
satellite audio from the satellite receiver, through the four muting relays located on the 37 pin connector,
and then back to the control board or mixer. (Note: The SMARTCASTER needs two inputs on the
console: One for satellite audio, and a second for local audio from the hard drive. The mixing and
matching of levels between these two audio feeds is done at the console or through an external mixer.)
Satellite Audio Wiring for 37 Pin Connector
For systems using more than one satellite service, some type of Network switching is needed. Refer to the
appropriate sections of this manual for the station’s type of switching needs. Note that some switching
devices still use the muting relays to mute the output of the Switcher. Others take care of muting
internally during Local Breaks.
Local Audio
Finally, the last type of wiring is local audio. This is audio from the hard drive of the SMARTCASTER
itself. The local audio inputs and outputs are the RCA unbalanced connectors or dB connectors on the
rear of the unit. (Some SMARTCASTERS use the AudioPort or other internal audio cards for digital
audio. Refer to either AUDIO CARD DESCRIPTION or AUDIOPORT Installation for further
documenation on connectors.)
Connections to and from the SMARTCASTER may be routed through a dBX impedance matchine device.
Please refer to the section on the dBX AUDIOI PROCESSOR for correct wiring.
Important Note: While most broadcast equipment utilizes the left channel for monaural Operations,
the SMARTCASTER, in a monaural mode, uses the right channel.
If dBX impedance matching device(s) are not used, simply take the output of the SMARTCASTER, and
wire it to a second input on the console. Adjust the gain at the board to match satellite audio levels. Next,
wire the production source into the input of the SMARTCASTER. This can be the audition channel of
the control board, the program channel of a production board, or the output of a dedicated recording
source.
For SMARTCASTERS with the Simultaneous Playback and Record Option, there are two outputs on the
SMARTCASTER. The output labeled, ‘AIR’ should be wired as described above. This output plays the
commercials and Functions over the air as commanded by the satellite service.
The output labeled, ‘AUDITION’, should be wired to a third input. This output is used to audition back
any material recorded into the SMARTCASTER. Of course, with Simultaneous Playback and Record,
