sending data, disconnection from the server, whether the link is starting up or shutting down, and
any errors that occur.
For ease of testing, a test mode has been implemented (this can be turned on by recompiling the
VidClient application with TEST defined). Figure 11 shows two VidClient applications with the test
mode on. Test mode automatically generates “on”, “off or “error” messages every five seconds, to
simulate data coming from the infra-red motion detector on the serial port.
Currently, the only link between the two VAN computers is the ATM link, which carries the MPEG
data. In the new system, the TCP/IP connection could be connected via the university’s standard
Ethernet network, os possibly through the existing ATM link. This was previously unavailable with
the VAN II 2.0 software (neither VAN is currently connected to the university network), but is
possible with version 3.0.
