2.8.1 IDE Connector Configuration (J12, J17)
The two IDE interface connectors are physically oriented to allow for constructing simple ribbon cables.
The signal locations on the connectors are also arranged to support this. Figure 2–5 shows how ribbon
cables can be arranged to support four IDE devices. The cable to drives 1 and 2 is a standard 40-pin IDE
cable connected to J12. The cable to drives 3 and 4 is made up of the first twenty signals from J12
(extending from the drive 2 connector) plus the 20 signals from J17.

2.8.2 IDE Interface Configuration
Use SETUP to specify your IDE hard disk drive type. Refer to the SETUP section in Chapter 3 for
details.
If you do not find a drive type whose displayed parameters match the drive you are using, use drive type
USER. It allows you to manually enter the drive’s parameters. The drive manufacturer provides the
drive parameters—check the drive’s documentation for the proper values to enter.
If you are using a newer IDE drive, use drive type AUTO. It automatically configures the drive type
parameters from information provided by the drive itself. The Autoconfigure function is described in
Chapter 3.
