What does 2G/3G network mean?

3G is a third generation mobile communications standard

(UMTS / Universal Mobile Telecommunications System),

with which significantly higher data transfer rates are pos-

sible than with the second generation (2G) mobile com-

munications standard, the GSM standard (Global System

for Mobile Communications).

For a mobile telephone conversation, however, it is irrele-

vant which standard is available; the advantages of the

higher transfer rates only apply to data applications.
