Curiouslyenough,anetworknodethatactsasasourceofIPv6multicast
trafficisonlyanindirectparticipantinMLDsnooping—itjustprovides
multicasttraffic,andMLDdoesn’tinteractwithit.(Note,however,thatin
anapplicationlikedesktopconferencinganetworknodemayactasboth
asource
andanMLDhost;butMLDinteractswiththatnodeonlyinits
roleasanMLDhost.)
Asourcenodecreatesmulticasttrafficbysendingpacketstoamulticast
address.InIPv6,addresseswiththefirsteightbitsset(thatis,“FF”asthe
firsttwocharactersoftheaddress)
aremulticastaddresses,andanynode
thatlistenstosuchanaddresswillreceivethetrafficsenttothataddress.
Applicationsoftwarerunningonthesourceanddestinationsystems
cooperatestodeterminewhatmulticastaddresstouse.(Notethatthisis
afunctionoftheapplicationsoftware,notofMLD.)
WhenMLDsnoopingisenabledonaVLAN,theswitchactstominimize
unnecessarymulticasttraffic.Iftheswitchreceivesmulticasttraffic
destinedforagivenmulticastaddress,itforwardsthattrafficonlytoports
ontheVL ANthathaveMLDhostsforthataddress.Itdropsthattrafficfor
ports
ontheVL ANthathavenoMLDhosts.
