1. Accessing Amazon Prime from Overseas
There is one drawback when using the Amazon Kindle Fire – head overseas and you could nd yourself having dif-
culty accessing Amazon Prime and the streamed video service.
While the Kindle Fire remains a US-only device, these problems will persist, and users can only attempt to resolve
them by using proxy servers (many of which are unreliable) or third party apps (again unreliable; although the World
Wide Kindle Fire (http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/media_and_video/world-wide-kindle-re_bwynm.
html) app has had its fans, it is seemingly useless now).
The most popular way around this is to use the Dolphin Browser HD app and a service called Unblock-US.com. Full
details on this strategy can be found at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/secret-kindle-re-north-america/; it is worth
adding to this that if you are not the holder of a US street address or credit card there are online services that make
it possible for you to setup an online pre-payment credit card. EntroPay is one of the most popular, making it easy to
create a nation-free payment card that you can load with money ready to spend on Prime Instant Video!
There is light at the end of the tunnel for users, however. While all you need for successful use is a US credit card and
a suitable proxy to fool the Amazon Prime service into thinking you’re still home, the wider roll-out of the Kindle Fire to
Europe in 2012 should overcome all regional issues.
What this means for Europeans using the original Kindle Fire is another matter entirely, of course. Amazon continues
to duck and dive with device updates, breaking workarounds to prevent unauthorised access to its streamed video
service overseas, so there can never be a denitive x for this problem.
