2.6.2 MAC Thrashing Limit Exceeded
Message To Be Supplied
Severity Minor
Explanation Any time a MAC move occurs, it is considered a potential duplicate
address. When the first MAC move is detected a system-wide one sec-
ond timer starts. During this second, the MAC move count incre-
ments. For inter-card interfaces, if the count exceeds 128 before
the second expires, a duplicate address condition is declared and
the interface on which the next MAC move occurs is learning dis-
abled. Packets received will continue to forward. For intra-card
interfaces the interface is learning disabled immediately and will
stay in a learning disabled state for 60 seconds. A PORT007 log
(INFO) is also produced showing the port state change from UP-UP-
Online to UP-UP-Degraded.
Action Perform the following:
1. Check for network loops, since that is probably the cause of the log.
2. If the command SET SWITCH MACREMOVALMODE=AGEONLY has been issued,
and a cable that handles a large number of devices is physically moved from one port
to another, the device MAC addresses will naturally appear on the new port and will
be detected by the MAC Thrash Limiting feature. This could trigger the alarm.
