Preface This guide contains instructions on how to use the AT-S47 Management Software and the management interface to manage your AT-WD1008 Gigabit Ethernet Wavelength Division Multiplexer. Note The AT-WD1008 Multiplexer must contain the optional AT-WDM02 Management Module in order for you to manage the device. The management module comes with the AT-S47 Management Software and the management interface pre-installed. No software installation is required.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide How This Guide is Organized This manual is divided into three sections. Section I: Getting Started This section contains just one chapter. It explains how to start a local or Telnet management session. This chapter also describes the Main Menu and how to navigate around the management menus. Section II: Menu Interface The chapters in this section describe how to manage the multiplexer using the AT-S47 menu interface.

Section I Getting Started The chapter in this section provides a brief overview of the AT-S47 Management Software and explains how to start a management session.
Chapter 1 Getting Started The AT-S47 Management Software and the management interface simplify the task of monitoring and managing your Allied Telesyn AT-WD1008 Wavelength Division Multiplexer. The interface, which comes pre-installed on the AT-WDM02 Management Module along with the AT-S47 software, enables you to manage the multiplexer through easy-to-use menus or with command line interface (CLI) commands.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Local Management Session You establish a local management session with an AT-WD1008 multiplexer using the RS-232 port on the AT-WDM02 Management Module. Once the session is started, you will see a menu from which you can make selections to configure and monitor the multiplexer. You can configure all of the multiplexer’s operating parameters from a local management session.

Section I: Getting Started Telnet Management Session Any management workstation on your network that has the Telnet application protocol can be used to manage an AT-WD1008 multiplexer. In this guide, a Telnet management session is referred to as a remote management session because you can manage the multiplexer from any workstation on your network that has the application protocol. You do not have to be physically near the multiplexer.

AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide SNMP Management Session Another way to remotely manage an AT-WD1008 multiplexer is with an SNMP application program, such as HP Openview. A familiarity with Management Information Base (MIB) objects is necessary to manage a multiplexer with an SNMP management program. To manage a multiplexer with an SNMP application program, you must download the Allied Telesyn multiplexer MIB file from the Allied Telesyn web site and compile the file with your SNMP program.

Section II: Menu Interface Parameter Description Gateway Address Specifies the IP address of the default router. This address is required to manage the multiplexer remotely if the remote network management station is separated from the multiplexer by a router. Manager address (1 - 4) Specifies up to four IP addresses of network management stations that will receive SNMP traps from the multiplexer. The addresses are optional.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Naming the Multiplexer This procedure assigns a name to the multiplexer. The name is displayed in all management software windows. Names can make it easier for you to identify the different multiplexers in your network when you configure and manage them. The default name is WDM1008. To name the system, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select System configuration. 2. From the System Configuration Menu, select System name and press the Enter key.
Section II: Menu Interface Configuring the Trap Parameters This section contains the procedure for specifying which traps are to be sent to the SNMP management workstations. To set the trap parameters, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select System configuration. 2. From the System Confirmation Menu, select Trap parameters. The Trap parameters menu in Figure 8 is displayed.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide The traps are defined in the table below: Table 1 SNMP Traps SNMP Trap Description Cold Start Transmitted whenever the multiplexer is power cycled. Authentication Transmitted whenever an SNMP application program attempts to perform a Set function, and the Set community string on an SNMP application program is different from the same community string on the multiplexer.
Section II: Menu Interface Pinging a Remote System The procedure in this section tests whether a valid link exists between the multiplexer and another network device. This can be useful in situations where a communication problem exists between the two devices. The multiplexer sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo request to the end node. If the node is operating and receives the request, it sends a reply to the multiplexer.

The Activity Monitor in Figure 11 is displayed, reporting the results of the pinging command. Section II: Menu Interface Resetting the Management Module There are two ways to reset the management software: ❑ Pressing the RESET switch located on the front panel of the management module. ❑ Using the Reset and restart the WDM02 feature in the management software interface. Resetting the management module does not interrupt the flow of the Ethernet traffic through the multiplexing ports or GBIC modules. Note You cannot reset the multiplexer from the management software.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Configuring the RS-232 Port The default settings for the RS-232 port on the front panel of the management module are as follows: ❑ Baud rate: 9600 bps ❑ Duplex mode: Full ❑ Data bits: 8 ❑ Parity: None ❑ Stop bits: 1 ❑ Flow control: None To configure the baud rate and duplex mode for the RS-232 port on the management module, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select System Configuration. 2.
Section II: Menu Interface Parameter Data rate (“baud” rate) Description This selection allows you to specify the speed of the port. When you select this option, the program displays a list of possible baud rates. Possible baud rates are: • 19200 bps • 9600 bps (default) • 4800 bps • 2400 bps 4. Return to the Main Menu. Changes to the RS-232 port parameters take effect the next time you start a local management session.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Displaying RLL Error Statistics The Statistics Menu displays Run-length-limit (RLL) Errors. An RLL error is a violation in the 8B/10B coding rules in which there are more than five consecutive zeros in the data stream. ❑ Run-length-limit (RLL) Error (TX) occurs in the transmitting path when data is transmitted from a local system. ❑ Run-length-limit (RLL) Error (RX) occurs in the receiving path when data is transmitted from a remote system.

Section II: Menu Interface Configuring a Module This section contains instructions on how to configure a module. It should be noted that each type of module (e.g., GBIC port, multiplexer port, and power supply) has its own parameters. The means that the Module Configuration menu, where you configure a module, is different for each type of module. For example, the selections Module status and Vendor information are displayed only for a GBIC module. They are not displayed for a multiplexing port.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide The fields in the Module Configuration menu for a GBIC module are defined in the table below: Parameter Description Port - Link Indicates whether there is an active connection between a port and the device connected to the port. Refer to Table 2 on page 45 for descriptions of the possible statuses. Module name Specifies a name for the selected GBIC module. The module name can be up to 20 alphanumeric characters in length.

CH 1 to CH 4 or CH 5 to CH8 Lists the ports handled by the WEST (OPT A) or the EAST (OPT B) multiplexing port. • CH 1 to CH 4 are displayed when the WEST (OPT A) multiplexing port is selected. • CH 5 to CH8 are displayed when the EAST (OPT B) multiplexing port is selected.
Section II: Menu Interface Parameter Description Taken together, these two port shutdown selections give you complete control over a GBIC port’s ability to send traffic, both to its end node and to the multiplexing port. If you want to shutdown a GBIC port completely so that it will not send traffic in either direction, you must use both shutdown selections. Link Test Disable OPT X Link Test Enable OPT X Disables or enables the Link Test feature for the selected multiplexing port.

Return to the Module Status Menu. Fan Module Settings To configure the settings of the fan modules (FAN A or FAN B), perform the following procedure: 1. From the Module Status Menu, use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select the fan module whose settings you wish to configure. 2. Press the Enter key.

Section II: Menu Interface Overview The Link Test feature is a fast and easy way for you to test the link integrity between local and remote multiplexing ports. The test is usually performed during pre-installation, while there is no real traffic on the ports. Below are guidelines to observe when performing a Link Test: ❑ You can test the multiplexing ports on an AT-WD1008 independently of each other.

Section II: Menu Interface Enabling or Disabling Link Test To enable or disable a Link Test on a multiplexing port, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select Module status and configuration. The Module Status Menu is displayed in Figure 20 on page 44. 2. From the Module Status Menu, select either the WEST (OPT A) multiplexing port or the EAST (OPT B) multiplexing port where you wish to enable or disable a Link Test. 3. Press the Enter key.

Section II: Menu Interface Overview The Missing Link feature of the AT-WD1008 unit enables the multiplexers to pass the “Link” status of their connections to each other. If a multiplexer detects a problem with one of the ports, such as the loss of connection on a GBIC module, the multiplexer passes the change in link status to the other multiplexer which shuts down the connection to the corresponding port, thus notifying the end-node connected to the port that the connection has been lost.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide If a loss of connection occurs between two multiplexing ports, the links are dropped on the corresponding GBIC modules on the multiplexers. For instance, if there is a loss of connection on the WEST (OPT A) multiplexing port of a local multiplexer, the links are dropped on the GBIC modules installed in CH1 to CH4 on the local multiplexer and also on the GBIC modules installed in CH5 to CH8 on the remote multiplexer, as shown in the illustration below.
Section II: Menu Interface Enabling or Disabling Missing Link To enable or disable Missing Link, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select Module status and configuration. The Module Status Menu in Figure 20 on page 44 is displayed. Note The default setting for Missing Link is enabled. This feature can be disabled only through the management software. 2. In the Module Status Menu, select one of the followings: ❑ Disable missing link to disable the Missing Link feature.

Section II: Menu Interface Displaying the Activity Monitor The management software keeps a list of multiplexer events, such as the removal of a GBIC module or the loss of a data link. This list is referred to as the Activity Log. This log can be useful in monitoring the operation of the unit and in troubleshooting any problems. You view the log by displaying the Activity Monitor. To display the Activity Log, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select Administration. 2.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Specifying a SysLog Server To transmit the multiplexer events to a syslog server, perform the following procedure: 1. From the Main Menu, select Administration. 2. From the Administration Menu, configure the fields listed in the table below: Parameter Description SysLog Server Address Specifies the IP address of a syslog server on the network. SysLog Facility Code Assigns a facility code to the multiplexer log messages.
Chapter 7 AT-S47 Interface Security This chapter describes the security features of the AT-S47 interface. These features allow you to configure the interface so as to prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing it and making changes to the configuration settings of the multiplexer.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Configuring the AT-S47 Interface Security Modifying the Management Password To prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing the interface and altering a multiplexer’s configuration settings, you can assign a password to the program. Any person who starts the program will be required to enter the password, regardless of how they access the program (i.e., RS-232 port or Telnet program). The default value for the interface is no password.
Section II: Menu Interface Specifying a Timeout Value Specifying a timeout value is a way to prevent unauthorized individuals from using the interface in the event you forget to exit the interface and leave your management station unattended. By specifying a timeout value, the program will end the session if it detects that there has been no management activity after the timeout value has expired. The default for the timeout value is 5 minutes.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Access Method Remote Omega Enabled No Remote Omega Description These two selections allow you to control whether the AT-S47 interface can be accessible via Telnet or an SNMP application program from a management workstation on your network. The default for this access method is enabled. 4. Return to the Main Menu.
Chapter 8 AT-S47 Image Download This chapter explains how to obtain new versions of the AT-S47 Management Software and how to download the software onto an AT-WDM02 Management Module.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Obtaining Software Updates New releases of the AT-S47 Management Software are available from the Allied Telesyn web site at www.alliedtelesyn.com and from our FTP server at ftp.alliedtelesyn.com. To log on to the FTP server, enter “anonymous” for the user name and your email address for the password. A zip file posted on the ATI web site contains two different AT-S47 image files.
Section II: Menu Interface Using XModem to Upgrade the Management Software The AT-S47 Management Software interface supports software upgrades to the management module using XModem. It is assumed that you have the required setup to support this type of file transfer. This upgrade procedure can only be performed from a local management session because the XModem transfer occurs through the multiplexer’s RS-232 management port.

From the HyperTerminal main window, select the Transfer menu. Then select Send File...

The Xmodem File Send window in Figure 32 displays current status of the software download. The download process take a couple minutes to complete. Figure 32 XModem File Send Window Be sure to wait until the management module has fully downloaded and re-initialized the software before you attempt to reestablish your management session.
AT-S47 Management Software User’s Guide Using TFTP to Upgrade the Management Software If your network is using the TCP/IP protocol, you can use a workstation on the network and TFTP software to download a copy of the current software to the multiplexer. The multiplexer contains the TFTP server portion of the TFTP protocol. The workstation must contain the TFTP client portion of the protocol.
Section III Command Line Interface This section contains the command line commands for managing the AT-WD1008 multiplexer. This section contains the following chapters: ❑ Chapter 9. Chapter 9 Getting Started Starting a Command Line Management Session In order to manage an AT-WD1008 multiplexer using the command line commands, you must first start a local or Telnet management session. The instructions for starting a management session are described in Chapter 1, Getting Started on page 14. Once you have started a local or Telnet management session, you will see the AT-S47 Main Menu.

Description This command instructs the multiplexer to ping an end node on the network. You can use this command to determine if a valid link exists between the multiplexer and the end node. You specify the end node by its IP address. The result of the ping are displayed on the screen.

Resetting the management module does not interrupt the flow of the Ethernet traffic through the multiplexing ports or GBIC modules. Note You cannot reset the multiplexer from the management software. Section III: Command Line Interface Taken together, the two commands SET LOCAL PORT and SET REMOTE PORT give you complete control over a GBIC port’s ability to send and receive traffic. To stop a GBIC from transmitting data to its local end node, you would use the SET LOCAL PORT command, which disables the GBIC’s laser. To stop a GBIC module from forwarding traffic from its end node to the multiplexing port, you would use the SET REMOTE PORT command.

Chapter 15 Activity Log Commands This section describes the commands that control the Activity Log. The Activity Log contains a list of multiplexer operating events, such as the removal of a GBIC module or the loss of a data link. This log can be useful in monitoring the operation of the unit and when troubleshooting any problems. For a list of the events and their definitions, refer to Appendix B, AT-WDM02 Activity Log Events on page 146.

When the console is activated, you can manage the multiplexer using a terminal or a PC with a terminal emulator connected to the RS232 port on the management module. The default for local management is enabled. You can also use this command to set the duplex mode to full-duplex (echo) on the RS232 console port of the management module.

When the console is deactivated, you cannot manage the multiplexer using the RS232 port on the management module. (This is referred to as local management.) The only way to manage the unit would be using Telnet. The default for local management is enabled.
