(3) Consistency with VLANs belonging to MST instances when using MSTP
When you use the Ring Protocol with the Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol, all the VLANs in the VLAN
mappings for the Ring Protocol must correspond with the VLANs belonging to MST instances for MSTP.
VLANs that do not correspond are put into Blocking status, possibly causing communication problems.
4.2.3 Notes when using the Ring Protocol with GSRP
Consider the following when you use the Ring Protocol with GSRP.
(1) How to run the Ring Protocol and GSRP together
You need to match all the VLANs in the VLAN mappings for the Ring Protocol and the VLANs in the GSRP
VLAN groups. If you want to use both protocols but run them independently, the VLANs in the VLAN
mappings for the Ring Protocol must not match the VLANs in the GSRP VLAN groups.
(2) Transfer status of the ring ports
The Ring Protocol controls the transfer status of ring ports on nodes that use the Ring Protocol with GSRP.
This is true regardless of the gsrp exception-port command setting. Note that settings by the following
configuration commands are also ignored:
- gsrp reset-flush-port
- gsrp no-flush-port
(3) Virtual link settings
If you use the Ring Protocol with GSRP, you need to configure virtual links in the same way as when STP is
used. However, specify virtual link IDs only for nodes on which both Ring Protocol and GSRP are used. You
must not specify virtual link IDs for any other ring nodes. If you specify a virtual link ID for a ring node on
which GSRP is not running, flush frames are not sent and received properly.
(4) VLAN changes during operation
To use the Ring Protocol and GSRP together, the VLANs in the VLAN mappings for the Ring Protocol and
the VLANs in the GSRP VLAN groups need to match. However, to prevent unexpected operation caused by an
inconsistency during a configuration change process, you need to execute the Priority or backup-lock
command on your backup device to disable switching to the master before you change your VLAN
configuration.
(5) Number of VLANs that can be set per VLAN group
When 511 or more VLANs are made to belong to a VLAN group for GSRP used with the Ring Protocol, ring
ports might temporarily change to Blocking status when the target VLAN group changes its status. Make sure
that no more than 510 VLANs are made to belong to a VLAN group for GSRP used with the Ring Protocol.
