(2) Application for a large building (multi-ring application [2])
The number of nodes in a ring is theoretically unlimited regardless of whether the nodes are chassis-type
(AX6700S/AX6300S series) or box-type (AX3600S and AX2400S) devices. Therefore, you can basically
increase the number of ring nodes according to the number of floors.
However, you can use a particular method if you have the following requirements:
- For management and security reasons, you want data not to be forwarded to any department or floor other
than the target.
- You want to contain a failure or fault to a limited network segment.
- You want to allow enough room for device capacities based on the current and future address usage or traffic.
For example, you can configure a multi-ring and have multiple network segments by using a combination of the
rings and VLANs. The following figure shows an example of this configuration.
Figure 3.4-2 Example of a ring application for a large building
For configuring a multi-ring, you can see the descriptions in section 2.1
. In addition, based on how to use
VLANs, you have either of the following two configurations. We recommend that you use a suitable
configuration depending on the scale or requirements of your network.
(A) VLAN-shared multi-ring configuration
Different rings can use the same VLAN, so this configuration is suitable for a situation where you want to
manage devices on the same VLAN although the departments are located on different floors.
(B) VLAN-excluded multi-ring configuration
Layer 3 forwarding is used to forward frames between rings. This configuration can localize traffic based on
the ring range. Therefore, this configuration is suitable for a situation where you have a larger network per
floor, where you have high traffic per floor, or where you want to divide your network into segments for
security reasons.
