3.4 Other application configuration examples
This section provides examples of other possible Ring Protocol applications.
(1) Access switch redundancy in a building network (multi-ring application [1])
If you use AX2400S series products as access switches, the Ring Protocol can provide redundancy for those
access switches. Redundancy is achieved through the multi-ring configuration with the backbone ring as
described below.
You can choose either of the following multi-ring configurations in terms of VLAN. For details on how to
configure the multi-ring, see section 2.1
.
(A) VLAN-shared multi-ring configuration
Rings can share and use the same VLAN, but to transfer data between VLANs, data is first forwarded to a
device that has the Layer 3 forwarding functionality. In the example figure below, for communication between
devices on floors 4 and 5, data travels to the chassis-type switch on floor 1.
(B) VLAN-excluded multi-ring configuration
Rings must use a separate and different VLAN, and devices at the boundaries between the rings must support
Layer 3 forwarding (for example, AX6700S/AX6300S series and AX3600S series). However, Layer 2 networks
can be localized within each floor, and data is forwarded through Layer 3 over the shortest path in the backbone
ring. In the example figure below, for communication between devices on floor 4 and 5, data is passed only
between the switches on floor 4 and 5.
We recommend that you choose the configuration that meets your requirements, based on the features of each
configuration described above.
