6. The contents of the conﬁguration ﬁle is processed as though the

commands have been entered by the operator at the console. The

commands in the ﬁle will modify the currently running conﬁgura-

tion.

NOTE: The current conﬁguration is not set back to the defaults before the

ﬁle is processed. Therefore, the ﬁle contents do not have to be a com-

plete conﬁguration but may contain just the items you wish to change.

7. Once the conﬁguration has been processed, the name stored in the

“diagnostics load ftp ﬁlename” parameter is assumed to be the name

of the ﬁrmware ﬁle to download. If the parameter is not empty, the

unit will use the TFTP protocol to load the ﬁle into RAM.

n If the ﬁrmware is different from the currently running version,

the unit will program the ﬂash memory with the new code and

restart to execute it.

n If the new ﬁrmware is the same, the unit discards the loaded ﬁle

and continues normal operation.

Distributing Firmware or Conﬁguration (Distribute)

Use the distribute option to send the ﬁrmware or conﬁguration from one

Ethernet or Token Ring Bridge to all other Ethernet or Token Ring

Bridges on the infrastructure (whether they are repeaters or are con-

nected to the wired infrastructure). By using the distribute option the

time needed to perform ﬁrmware upgrades or make global changes to the

conﬁguration is greatly decreased.

Once a new version of the ﬁrmware has been loaded into a single Ether-

net or Token Ring Bridge, (using Xmodem, CRC-Modem, Ftp or Bootp)

or the conﬁguration has changed, use the distribute option to upgrade all

other units.
