Upgrading SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005
Before starting the upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005, ensure that you know what
the SQL Server 2000 sa database password is, as you must enter it as part of the upgrade. Also ensure
that you are logged into Windows as an administrator-level user.
Upgrading to SQL Server 2005 requires running the same installer used for a new install of SQL Server
2005.
To upgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005
1. On the server to upgrade, ensure that the Distributed Transaction Coordination service is running:
a. Open the Windows Administrative Tools and select Services.
b. Select the Distributed Transaction Coordination service and, if it is not listed as started,
click Start Service.
2. To launch the installer, follow the instructions supplied with the SQL Server 2005 software.
3. When prompted, accept the End User License Agreement. Click Next.
4. On the Installing Prerequisites screen, click Install. When the prerequisites are finished installing,
click Next.
5. On the System Configuration Check screen, ensure that the Status for all is listed as Success. For
any Warnings or Errors listed, click the Message and follow the instructions to resolve the problem.
6. When the status of all items is Success, click Next.
7. On the Components to Install screen, select the following checkboxes:
a. SQL Server Database Services
b. Integration Services
c. Workstation components, Books Online and development tools
8. Click Next.
9. On the Instance Name screen, select Default instance. Click Next.
