Airport Stuttgart
History
The airport of Stuttgart is located in the heart of Europe. With its
more than 10 million inhabitants in the surrounding area and
numerous renown companies as well as tourist attractions it is the
perfect hub for every ones travels. A really good network and
comfortable connections to the main cities in Europe as well as
connections to North America, Canada and the Caribbean make it an
attractive airport. At present more than 100 destinations are being
served and 2000 flight movements are being registered per week.
Modern airport technology, perfect handling, attractive terminals with
quick access, service oriented and competent employees make it an
attractive partner for the airlines, travel agents and passengers. The
airport Stuttgart GmbH and its partners offer services in ground
handling and marketing from market analysis to custom promotion
campaigns for the airlines.
The history of Stuttgart airport begins in 1924 with the new Luft-
verkehr Württemberg AG. At this time the airport was located at the
Böblinger Hulb. The first landing was in 1925 with a Dornier Merkur.
In 1936 the decision was made to move to the Echterdinger Markung
and in 1939 a passenger terminal was opened. After WWII only
foreign airlines served Stuttgart airport.
Lufthansa though again started service from here in 1955. In 1961
the runway was extended to 2550m and the following years see the
airport expanding. In 1977 the new cargo terminal is taken into
service. On the 26th March 1991 the new terminal 1 is inaugurated
and in July 1996 the runway is extended to 3345m with CAT IIIb ILS
being introduced in 1997 to raise the level of standards. The 2nd June
1997 sees Delta Airlines take up a non-stop service to Atlanta.
Lufthansa Technik builds a new hangar in 1999 and a new tower
starts operation. It is the only European tower which is not located
directly on the airport areal as it is situated towards the south on the
outskirts of the village of Bernhausen.
