3. Ifyouarepaddlingariver,donotuseanankleleash.Thiscouldbeverydangerousbecauseifyoufalloff,your
boardcouldpullyouunderthewaterasitcontinuesdowntheriver.Also,anankleleashcouldgetcaughton
itemsunderthewaterandpull youoffofyourboardasyouareridingdowntheriver.
4. Becarefulinwindyconditions.Becauseyouarecompletelyabovethewater,strongwindscangreatlyaffectyou
andcouldpushyouaround.
5. Neverleaveyourboard,evenifyouloseyourpaddle.Youcanstillpaddleyourboardwithyourhands,whichis
easierthantryingtoswimbacktoshore.Also,ifthewindwastopickup,yourboardwillblowawayfromyou
fasterthanyoucanswimtoit.Thisiswhyanankleleashissoimportant.
6. FootPosition:Youshouldstandinthemiddleoftheboardwhenpaddling.Whenonflatwater,standwithyour
feetaboutshoulderwidthapartandfaceforward.Ifyouaresurfingorinchoppywater,youwanttotakemore
ofasurfer’sstancewithyourdominantfootfacingforward.Yourfeetarenotgluedtotheboard,makesureto
getusedtomovingyourfeetaroundontheboardbecausethesoonerthatyoudothisthemorecomfortable
youwillfeelaboutdoingturnsandridingwaves.
7. TheBestwaytoturnyourboardistostandwithyourfootatthetailoftheboardwithyourweightoverthefins.

7.2Sit‐on‐topPaddlingBasics
1. WhenpaddlingyourHula™11asasit‐on‐top,youwillwantasit‐on‐topkayakseat.Youcanpurchaseanysit‐
on‐topkayakseataslongasithastwosnaphooksforattachingtothed‐ringslocatedatthemiddleofthe
board.
2. Youwillalsoneedakayakpaddle.Tryingtouseyourstanduppaddlewillbedifficultbecauseitwillbehardto
keepgoinginastraightline.
3. YoushouldalwayswearaPFD(PersonalFloatationDevice)whensitdownpaddling.Becauseyouwillnotbe
usinganankleleash;ifyouweretofalloffofyourpaddleboard,youcouldquicklybecomeseparatedfromyour
paddleboardandneedawaytostayafloat.
4. Rememberthatbecauseyouaresittingabovethewaterline,strongwindscangreatlyaffectyou.

7.3SurfingDo’sandDon’ts
BeAware:Beawareofothersurfersandwaterusers,ofthesurfconditions,andofwhereyouaresurfing.
ComfortZone:Youshouldpaddlesurfinwavesthatyouarecomfortablein,don'tgetinoveryourhead.
Fitness:Makesureyouarephysicallyfitwhensurfing.Youneedtobeabletoswimbacktoshoreifyouloseyourboard
attheendofanexhaustingsession‐nomeanfeatina9footswell.
Food:Aswithswimming,donotgosurfingforatleast45minutesafterameal.
HoldorThrow:Knowwhentoholdontoyourpaddleboardandwhentogetridofit.Ifyouarepaddlingoutthenkeep
holdofyourboard,you'llgetoutbacktothelineupmorequicklyandyouwillnotputanyonepaddlingoutbehindyou
