8. CONFIGURING COMMON FEATURES
This section explains how to define many of the parameters required to operate an IP phone. Each example
shows either the steps to setting the parameter through the phone’s user interface, or provides the content to
add to the configuration files.
Setting the Password
A password can be configured on the IP phone using the phone’s user interface. The password restricts
access to advanced settings not meant for the common user. To change the password, follow these steps:
1. Select Menu.
2. Select 2 for Phone Settings.
3. Select 8 for Password.
4. Enter the old password using the keypad.
5. Press the Ok soft key or OK on the Navigation bar.
6. Press the Exit soft key until the idle screen appears.
Configuring Proxy and Registrar Servers
The IP 706 phone supports up to 6 uniquely defined proxy servers, 6 outbound proxy servers, and 6
registrar servers. Likewise, the IP 712 phone supports up to 12 each of these servers. The servers are
defined in the MAC address-based configuration file for each phone. The following configuration file
example shows a phone using one set of servers with the index 1. The steps in the example may be
repeated for each of the three server types as needed, changing the index number. The secondary server is
not required. Additional information about the parameters shown in this example is provided in
Appendix A on page 57.

To toggle between uppercase and lowercase letters or use the numeric keypad, press the
Aa1 soft key on the LCD display. This changes the character entry mode and is indicated
by a symbol in the upper right corner of the LCD display. A=uppercase letters,
a=lowercase letters, and 1=numbers. Add spaces by using the 0 (zero) key, and erase
characters by using the
soft key.
