To remove a bullet character
1 In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, select Bullets from the List Type menu.
2 Select the bullet character you want to remove, and choose Delete. (The first preset bullet character cannot be
deleted.)
Numbered list options
In a numbered list, the numbers are updated automatically when you add or remove paragraphs in the list. Note the
following:
• Only consecutive paragraphs are numbered sequentially. If you want to add non-numbered paragraphs (such as a
note or a bulleted list) between numbered paragraphs, you can use the Start At option to manually renumber the
steps following the nonnumbered paragraph. However, this number will not be updated if you add or remove
previous numbered paragraphs.
• Numbers are always left-aligned. You cannot align them to the right or on the decimal.
• By default, the numbering uses the same font attributes as the first character in the paragraph. For example, if you
italicize the first word, the number and separator are also italicized in that paragraph. You may want to edit the
font attributes of the entire list to ensure consistency. (
See “Formatting a bulleted or numbered list” on page 228.)
• Numbered lists cannot extend across cells (the numbering will restart in each cell).
To change numbered list options
1 Open the Bullets and Numbering dialog box.
2 Under Numbering Style, select the type of numbering you want to use from the Style menu. These options are
identical to those in the Numbering and Sections dialog box.
3 For Separator, select an item (such as Em Dash or None) from the menu, or type any single character (such as a
closing parenthesis). The Separator character appears to the right of the number character.
4 For Start At, type the number (not a letter) to appear at the beginning of the list. Changing this number is useful
when you want to start a new set of numbers immediately following another set of numbers, or when you want the
numbered list to continue after a non-numbered paragraph.
Note: If youchangethe StartAtnumberfor aparagraph, and then decide youwanttomakethatparagraph part of the
list’s automatic sequence, change the Start At number of the affected paragraph to 1.
5 Specify any other options, and then click OK.
To create a paragraph style that includes bullets or numbering
If you want to use the same kind of bullets or numbering in several sections of your document, you can save time by
making the bullets or numbering part of a paragraph style.
1 Choose New Paragraph Style from the Paragraph Styles palette menu.
2 On the left side of the New Paragraph Style dialog box, click Bullets and Numbering (you may need to scroll).
3 For List Type, select Bullets or Numbering.
4 Specify the bullet or numbering characteristics. (See “Formatting a bulleted or numbered list” on page 228.)
