designations may change. The master drive is always on the left most rear connector as viewing
the unit from the front. The slave connector is more to the righ t.
The slave drive is in an auxiliary cabinet which contains only the Quikstor Winchester and power
supply (of course fan, cables, etc.) - no XEBEC controller card! The main difference between this
method and the abovementioned alternate method is that this method uses only one Xebec card.
In this case, the slave unit is connected via daisy chaining off the 34 pin ribbon cable in the master
unit with a 'Y' cable or similar arrangement, just like with a floppy drive. The only other
connection is a 20 pin cable which ties the main unit to the slave. For this connection, a 20
conductor ribbon cable connects the Winchester 20 pin card edge connector with plug J3 on the
Xebec controller.
That's all there's to it, except for taking care of the drives. Just like floppy drives, the
Winchester drive has a resistor terminating pack on it. Same rules as for floppies apply. Keep the
terminating resistor in the last drive on the physical chain and remove all others; i.e., the first
Winchesters in this case. Also like floppy drives the Winchester drive has a drive select plug. Be
certain the first drive is setup for drive selects one, and the second, or slave, must be set for
drive select two. Since this is different for each Winchester drive, just like for the floppies, I
won't go into it here. Suffice it to say, if you order this from Quikdata it will have been done for you.
If you have questions or problems with the particular drive you purchased, contact Quikdata for
the proper jumper settings on the drive.
When configuring the software, this is now controller 0, with drive 1! Thus, when running
SASIXUxx, the controller field must be set to 0 and the drive must be set to 1 for the slave.
When running QSASSIGN, the following example may apply:
QSASSIGN 01: CPM 0 TO B:
That's the simple facts for connecting dual Winchester drives. Be sure to re-read the software,
especially SASIXUxx, the partitioning program and the drivers, since they must each be handled
differently for multiple Winchester drives; the settings will be different, depending which method
you have chosen.
