fiber(PN4013SCAPC‐3)andoneformulti‐modefiber
(PN4012SCAPC‐3).
TErecommendsFusionWideba
ndsplicesbecausetheyhavethelowestsplicelossandreturn
loss.MechanicalspliceshavehigherlossesandhigherbackreflectionthanFusionWideband
splicesandarenotrecommended.
UsingaFusionWidebandsplicerinvolvesfusingtogethertwob
uttedandcleavedendsoffiber.
TheFusionWidebandspliceralignsthefibersandmaintainsalignmentduringtheFusion
Widebandprocess.FusionWidebandspliceshaveverylowloss(typicallylessthan0.05dB)and
verylowbackreflection(returnloss).FusionWidebandsplicesshouldbeorganizedinasplice
traydesignedtostoreandprotectthesplices.
NOTE: Thefollowing proceduresassu methatthesystemis new fromthe factory andthat it has not
beenprogrammedwithbands.Ifyouarereplacingcomponentsinapre‐installedsystemwith
either new units or units that may already be program med (for example, re‐using units from
anothersystem),referto“ReplacingFu
sionWidebandComponents”onpage175.
OptionA:FusionWidebandSplicetheFiber‐OpticCabletotheSC/APCPigtail
1 MakesuretheFusionWidebandsplicerissettothepropermode(thatis,single‐or
multi‐mode).
2 Secure
boththefibercableandtheSC/APCpigtailinasplicetraythatisinstalledimmediately
adjacenttotheHub.
3 Prepare
thefiberendbycuttingbackthepolyethylenejacket,thekevlarorfiberglassstrength
members,theextrudedcoating,andthebuffercoatinginordertoexposethe“barefiber”–
claddingpluscore.
4 Ensuret
hatsufficientslackismaintainedinordertobeabletoreachtheFusionWideband
splicer.
5 Clean
theuncladfibercoreusingisopropylalcoholandlint‐freewipes.
6 Cleav
etheuncladfibertothelengthprescribedbytheFusionWidebandsplicer’s
specificationsheets.
7 RepeatStep4throughStep6fortheSC/APCpigtail.
8 Passthesplicesleeveonto
thefiberstrand.
9 Positionbo
thfiberendsintheFusionWidebandsplicerandcompletespliceinaccordance
withtheFusionWidebandsplicer’soperationinstructions.
10 Ensuret
hattheestimatedlossforthespliceasmeasuredbytheFusionWidebandspliceris
0.10dBorbetter.
11 SlidetheFusionWidebandsplicingsleeveoverthepointofth
eFusionWidebandsplice.
