This User’s Guide describes how to install Adaptec USB2connect adapters and associated drivers in Windows® and Macintosh® computers. Overview The Adaptec AUA-2000, AUA-3100LP, AUA-4000A, and AUA-5100 USB (Universal Serial Bus) adapters are compatible with USB 1.1 Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) and USB 2.0 Enhance Host Controller Interface (EHCI) devices and work in virtually any PCI slot. B or newer, with Macintosh OS 9.0.

However, only five connectors can be used at any one time.
Installing the USB2Connect Adapter Installing the USB2Connect Adapter 1 Discharge any static electricity from your body by touching a grounded metal object (such as the exposed metal parts on the back of your computer). 2 Turn off power to the computer and disconnect the power cord. 3 Open the computer cabinet. See your computer documentation for specific instructions, if needed. 4 Locate an unused 32- or 64-bit PCI expansion slot and remove the expansion slot cover.
Installing the USB2Connect Adapter 5 Low-profile computers only– To install the AUA-3100LP adapter in a low-profile computer, replace the existing full-height bracket with the low-profile bracket included in your kit. Remove and replace the bracket attachment screws on the adapter as shown below. 6 Insert the USB2connect adapter into the PCI expansion slot. Press down firmly until the card clicks into place. 7 Replace the slot cover screw.

Installing the Windows Drivers 3 Select Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install, then click Next. 4 Click Next again. 5 Click Have Disk. 6 Insert the Adaptec USB2connect CD into the CD-ROM drive. Type the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive in the Copy manufacturer’s files from box, as shown below, and click OK. Note: Your CD-ROM drive may have a different drive letter than the one shown in the example above.
Installing the Windows Drivers 7 On the next screen, click Continue Anyway. 8 When the installation is complete, click Finish. 9 If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
Installing the Windows Drivers 10 To verify that the driver is installed, right-click the My Computer desktop icon, select Properties, click the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and verify that the information shown below appears. USB 2.0 controller (see note) USB 1.1 controllers Note: USB 2.0 controller – Your controller is identified by its model number, which may differ from the model number shown in this User’s Guide.
Installing the Windows Drivers Windows 2000 1 Turn on the computer and insert the USB2connect CD. 2 Log in as Administrator Note: You need to log in as administrator or acquire administrator privileges for your computer in order to complete the driver installation. During the operating system startup, the adapter is detected and Windows searches for embedded drivers for the card.
Installing the Windows Drivers 5 On the Locate Driver Files window, uncheck all options except CD-ROM drives, and click Next. 6 On the Driver Files Search Results window, ensure that the Install one of the other drivers check box is not checked, and click Next.
Installing the Windows Drivers Note: What your computer shows may differ from what is shown in the example above. First the file may not be exactly the same, but it will have an inf extension. Also, the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive may not be e. 7 When Windows is finished copying drivers, click Finish. 8 Restart your computer if prompted to do so.

During the operating system startup, the adapter is detected and Windows searches for embedded drivers for the card. Note: It may take longer than usual for your system to restart because the operating system is locating and installing new drivers. 2 If you see a message that the PCI Universal Serial Bus driver was not located, select Automatic search for a better driver (Recommended).
Installing the Windows Drivers 5 To verify that the driver is installed, right-click the My Computer desktop icon, select Properties, and then click the Device Manager tab. Then, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and verify that the information shown below appears. Installing the Windows Drivers Windows 98 SE Windows 98 SE requires three device driver installations using the Add New Hardware Wizard because the operating system has no embedded USB drivers. During driver installation, you may need to use the operating system CD. 1 Turn on the computer and insert the USB2connect CD. 2 When the Add New Hardware Wizard opens, click Next. 3 Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) and click Next.
Installing the Windows Drivers 4 In the following window, uncheck all options and click Next. 5 Select The updated driver (Recommended) and click Next. 6 You may see a message that Windows is searching for the driver. Click Next.
Installing the Windows Drivers 7 When you see the following prompt, insert your Windows 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive and click OK. 8 Type the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive in the Copy files from box, as shown below, and click OK. Note: If you have copied your driver files onto your hard drive and know where they are located, you can browse to that folder instead of inserting the Windows 98 SE CD. Also, your CD-ROM drive may not necessarily be drive letter d.
Installing the Windows Drivers 9 When the third driver has been copied onto your system, the following window appears. Click Finish. Note: At this point, the first USB 1.1 driver is installed. To install the second USB 1.1 driver, repeat steps 2 through 9. 10 The Hardware Wizard will start again and attempt to install the USB 2.0 driver. Click Next.
Installing the Windows Drivers 11 Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended), and click Next. 12 Check the CD-ROM drive option, insert the USB2connect CD, and click Next.
Installing the Windows Drivers 13 If the following screen appears, select The updated driver (Recommended), and click Next. Otherwise, proceed to Step 15. 14 Windows shows you the location of the driver. Click Next. 15 When Windows is finished copying files, click Finish. 16 Windows displays an Unknown Device error message if there is no USB 2.0 driver on your system. Click Finish.
Installing the Windows Drivers 17 To verify that the drivers are installed, right-click on My Computer, select Properties, and click the Device Manager tab. Then, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section. You should see the information displayed below. Installing the Driver for Macintosh OS 9 Installing the Driver for Macintosh OS 9 To install the USB 1.1 drivers in your Macintosh computer, perform the following steps: Note: No installation is required for Macintosh OS 10.0.4 and later. The USB 1.1 drivers are built into the operating system. 1 Turn on the computer and insert the USB2connect CD. 2 Double-click the Start Installation Here file on the CD. 3 Follow the instructions to install the latest Macintosh USB drivers, if necessary.
Installing the Driver for Macintosh OS 9 7 Scroll down to the PCI area and click the arrow next to each PCI slot to reveal the PCI card information. If the USB2connect adapter is installed properly, you will see the following information listed under one of the slots. If you do not see the USB2connect adapter, verify that the Apple USB extensions are loaded and enabled. Also, verify that the card is seated properly. If you are still unable to resolve a problem, see the Adaptec Web site at www.adaptec.
Installing the Driver for Macintosh OS 9 USB2connect and Deep Sleep The USB2connect adapter does not support Deep Sleep on Power Macintosh G4 computers. When you use the USB2connect installer as described on page 22, the DisableSleep driver (shown at right) is installed and the Deep Sleep feature is disabled. After you install the USB2connect driver, if you try to put a Power Macintosh G4 into Deep Sleep, you will see the message shown below.
Connecting USB Devices Connecting USB Devices You can connect standard USB 1.1 or high-speed USB 2.0 devices to the connectors of the USB2connect adapter, as shown below. Hotplugging The USB2connect adapter supports hot-plugging, allowing USB devices to be attached and recognized while the computer is on. Device manufacturers support hot-plugging in different ways. Refer to the instructions for each device for attaching and mounting recommendations.
Troubleshooting Hubs The following figure shows the recommended configuration for connecting USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 devices. Note that you could connect USB 2.0 devices to a USB 1.1 hub, but the USB 2.0 devices would run at slower USB 1.1 speeds. Troubleshooting If you encounter difficulties installing or using your USB2connect adapter, check the following: ■ Is the card seated evenly in the PCI slot? ■ Did the driver fail to load? If so, try moving the card to a different PCI slot.
