- Setting up SETTING UP Unpacking your smartphone Your new smartphone comes packed in a protective box. Carefully unpack the box and remove the contents. If any of the following items is missing or damaged, contact your dealer immediately: • Your new Acer smartphone • USB cable • AC adapter • Headset Note In-box content varies depending on country and region.
Setting up - 5 No. Item Description 1 Power button Press to turn the screen on/off or enter sleep mode; press and hold to turn the smartphone on or off. 2 3.5 mm headphone jack Connects to stereo headphones. 3 Front-facing camera Use for selfies and online video chat. 4 LED indicator Indicates the phone’s charge status and if there are any messages needing your attention. 5 Smartphone speaker Emits audio from your smartphone; suitable for holding to your ear.
- Setting up Installing a SIM or microSD card To take full advantage of your smartphone’s telephony capabilities, you must install a SIM card. Your new smartphone has multiple SIM card holders; install any combination of SIM cards. Additionally, you may wish to increase your smartphone’s storage by inserting a microSD card into the labeled slot. 1. Turn off the smartphone by pressing and holding the power button. 2.

Align the gold-colored connectors on the battery with the connectors at the top of the battery compartment and insert the battery.
- Setting up 5. Replace the cover by aligning the tabs on the cover into the slots on the smartphone. Gently press the cover until it snaps in place. SIM card lock Your smartphone may come with a SIM card lock, i.e., you will only be able to use the SIM card provided by your network operator. To cancel the SIM lock, contact your network provider.
Using your smartphone - 9 U S IN G YOUR SMARTPHONE Turning on for the first time To turn on your smartphone for the first time, press and hold the power button until the screen turns on. You will then be asked to configure some settings before you can use your smartphone. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete setup. Note A Windows ID is necessary to use some features on your smartphone.
- Using your smartphone Locking your smartphone If you will not use your smartphone for a while, briefly press the power button to lock access. This saves power and ensures your smartphone does not unintentionally use any services. Your smartphone will lock automatically if it is not used for one minute. Waking your smartphone If the screen is off and the smartphone does not react to any taps on the screen or front panel button, then it has been locked and is in sleep mode.
Using your smartphone - 11 The Start screen The first screen you see after starting up the smartphone is the Start screen. This screen displays a selection of information in Live Tiles which update in real time. Tap a tile to open the corresponding app. Tiles show you things like how many new messages you have, missed calls, your photo album, and contact images. Swipe to the left to view the full app list and settings available on your smartphone.
- Using your smartphone Status icons and the Action center The icons in the status bar give you an overview of your smartphone’s status. If the status bar is hidden, swipe down from the top of the screen. The top-left area displays status information, such as connectivity, signal strength, and notifications, such as a new message. The topright displays battery status and time. Notifications and quick actions Swipe the status bar down to view quick actions and more information about notifications.
Using your smartphone - 13 1. Swipe left to open the app list and tap Settings > System > Notifications & actions. 2. Under Choose your quick actions, tap a tile and select a quick action from the list. Action center From quick actions, swipe down again, or tap Expand, to access the full Action center. Similar to quick actions, these allow you to instantly adjust or open settings. The function of each tile varies; you can tap to enable/disable a function, or to toggle through several setting levels.
- Using your smartphone Viewing open apps Tap and hold the Back button to display thumbnails of apps that are currently open. Swipe left or right to see all apps. Tap an thumbnail to jump to that app. Adjusting the volume Use the Volume up or Volume down buttons on the side of the smartphone to adjust the volume. The volume bar appears at the top of the screen to indicate the set level. Tap the down arrow to adjust other related settings.
Using your smartphone - 15 Note The keyboard layout will change according to the text box type selected. To type in ALL CAPS, tap and hold the key. To type special characters, such as æ or ê, tap and hold the letter to open a list of available special characters. Predictive text Windows Phone provides predictive text input. As you tap the letters of a word, a selection of words are displayed above the keyboard that continue the sequence of letters tapped, or are a close match allowing for errors.
- Ask Cortana A SK C O R T A N A Cortana is your personal assistant on your phone. Cortana can be used to remind you about something at a set time, or when you reach a particular place. To launch Cortana, simply tap the Cortana tile on the Start screen. The first time you launch Cortana, you will need to go through a quick setup process. You will need to be connected to the internet for Cortana to work. Setting up Cortana 1. Tap the Cortana tile to launch Cortana.
Ask Cortana - 17 Using Cortana Searching for information 1. Tap the Cortana tile to launch Cortana. 2. Tap Ask me anything to enter your search request, or tap the microphone icon to tell Cortana what you need. 3. Once you’ve entered your search request, Cortana will search for information using Bing. Setting a reminder 1. Tap the Cortana tile to launch Cortana. 2. Tap Ask me anything and tap the microphone icon to tell Cortana what you need to be reminded of. 3.
- People PEOPLE Once you have set up an email or Facebook account on your smartphone (please see Setting up email on page 30) any contacts stored for that account will be imported to your smartphone. Your friends’ Windows Live and Facebook feeds will appear in the People app, their photos appear in your Photo app. When you tap a contact’s name, their Profile page opens, displaying contact details. You can call, send a text message, or send an email to the contact.
People - 19 Adding a contact Open the Contacts section of the People app. Tap then select an account for the new contact: • Phone • Enter the information for the contact by tapping each field. You will need to tap when you are finished entering information for each category, and then again when you have finished entering the contact’s information.
- Making calls MAKING CALLS This chapter shows you how to make phone calls, and the various options available to you during your call. Before making a call Check that the phone function is on before you make a call. You can confirm the phone status from the status bar. Note Most SIM cards come with a pre-set PIN from the provider. If you are asked to enter a PIN, enter it and tap OK. Making a call 1. Tap the Phone tile on the Start screen. 2.
Making calls - 21 Note GSM carriers all recognize 112 as an emergency number. This will usually connect you to an operator who will be able to connect you to the emergency services in your area. In North America, dialling 112 will redirect you to 911. SIM cards may come with other emergency numbers, contact your network provider for details. Dialing an international number When dialing international numbers, there is no need to enter the international direct dialing prefix (‘00’ etc.

Making a call to one of your contacts You can make a call to one of your contacts by tapping either the Phone tile, or the People tile. • From the Phone app, tap Speed dial or History and tap at the bottom of the page to open your list of contacts. • In the People app your contacts will be visible. 1. Tap the contact you want to call to open their contact card. 2. Tap the number you wish to use to call them.
Making calls - 23 Ending a call To end a call, press End call from the voice call screen. The voice call screen Once you have dialed your number the voice call screen appears, which displays the number/ contact you are talking to, the call duration and tiles to open the onscreen number pad, put the call on hold, route audio to the speaker, mute the call or add another call (please refer to Conference calls on page 24).
- Making calls Putting a call on hold To put a call on hold, tap Hold. To return to the call, tap Hold again. Conference calls If you have one call on hold and another online, you can combine both calls to create a conference call. After the first call is established, tap Add call to dial the second number. When both calls are connected, tap Merge calls to start the conference call. Note You may need to have conference calls activated on your SIM card. Contact your network provider for details.
Messaging - 25 MESSAGING This chapter shows you how to set up and use the messaging functions of your smartphone. All SMS and MMS messages are accessed via Messaging. Messaging automatically arranges received and sent messages into conversations by contact name or phone number. To access Messaging tap the Messaging tile on the Start screen. Creating a new message You can use your smartphone to compose SMS and MMS messages. Tap to compose a new message. Enter one or more recipients.
- Messaging Note SMS messages may be up to 160 characters long. If your message is longer than 160 characters, it will be sent as multiple linked messages. Most phones will automatically join the linked messages to present the recipient with a single long message, however, some older phones do not have this ability. Replying to a message When a new text message arrives the smartphone will play a sound. A summary of the message and sender information will appear briefly in the Status bar.
Messaging - 27 Important You may be charged to download message content, especially if you are roaming. Please contact your provider if you have any questions. Note Downloads can take a long time, depending on your connection quality. If you reply or open another app, the download will be stopped. 3. Tap the message to view the content. 4. To reply to the message, enter your text in the text box labeled type a text message and tap . Plain text replies will be sent as SMS messages.
- Messaging Group text This automatically groups text messages by sender. Emergency messages You can enable or disable receiving emergency messages, also known as Amber alerts. The default setting is to receive all alerts.
Going online - 29 GOING O N LI N E Browsing the Internet In order to browse the Internet with your smartphone, you must be connected to a data or wireless network. Using the browser Tap the Internet Edge tile on the Start screen to start browsing. To open a new website, tap the address box at the bottom of the page. Enter the address using the keyboard and tap . To view your browsing history, bookmarks or frequently visited sites, tap the ’...’ icon the address box. You may open multiple pages.
- Going online Tap and hold an item on a page to open a context menu that lists the available options for that item. Use a pinch action to zoom in or out while viewing a page . Setting up email Your smartphone enables you to access your email. Most popular ISPs can be set up in a few easy steps. Tap Outlook Mail on the Start screen, then Get Started and Add account to start. Select your email service provider then enter your email address and password. Tap Sign in to access your account.
Going online - 31 Windows Store Note Windows Store may not be available in all countries and regions. You need to have a Windows ID set up and active on your smartphone before you can use Windows Store. You will be prompted to set up or sign into your account(s) the first time you use Windows Store. Tap the Store tile on the Start screen to begin. Here you can obtain a variety of add-on programs and apps to enhance the functionality of your smartphone.
- Going online Using the map Tap the Maps icon in the apps list. Drag the map with your finger to move the map around. Search Get current location Tap to open menu You can zoom in or out using a pinch action, or double tap a location on the map to zoom in on the location. Note Not all zoom levels are available for all locations. To select a location, Search or tap and hold a point on the map. Information about the selected location is displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Using the camera - 33 USING THE CAMERA Your smartphone features two digital cameras, one mounted on the rear, the other on the front. This section will take you through all the steps in taking photos and videos with your smartphone. To activate the camera open the apps list and tap Camera. Icons and settings Image settings Gallery Options Video Camera The icons across the top of the screen allow you to open the Gallery, toggle image settings, and open advanced options.
- Using the camera Video settings The settings at the top of the screen change when Video mode is active. Three icons are displayed: Switch camera, Video light, and More. Tap to toggle setting on or off, or to view more image settings. Tap the arrow to see: White balance, Focus, and Brightness. More Settings Tap ’...’ in the corner of the screen to see additional options and settings: Lenses, Photo timer, Bracketing, and Settings.
Using the camera - 35 Viewing photos and videos After you have taken your photo or video, it is automatically saved. Once you have taken a photo or video, you can view it by tapping the Photo tile on the Start screen. Scroll through the collections to find the item you wish to view. Tap the thumbnail to view the file.
- Accessories and tips ACCESSORIES AND TIPS This chapter shows you how to use accessories with your smartphone, as well as provide useful tips for when you are using your smartphone. Using the headset Your smartphone comes packaged with a headset with built-in microphone for handsfree use when making calls. To use the headset, plug it into the smartphone’s 3.5 mm headphone jack. When the headset is plugged in, all audio is routed to the headset, and the speakers are turned off.
Accessories and tips - 37 Note A Mobile hotspot over Wi-Fi uses your smartphone’s Wi-Fi connection. If you have a Wi-Fi connection enabled, and turn on a Mobile hotspot, the previous Wi-Fi connection will be terminated. Important Some providers and countries do not allow the use of a smartphone as a mobile hotspot over cellular networks. Please check with your provider before trying to do so.
