To obtain a sufficiently large drop of blood from an alternate site, lancing must be deeper than on the finger. However,
these sites are usually less sensitive to pain.
6. Press the plunger all the way down.
The plunger returns about a third of the way. The lancing device is primed.
23.3 Obtaining blood
1. Choose a fleshy area of the alternate site and wash it with warm, soapy water or use an
alcohol wipe. This ensures that the puncture site is clean. Allow the skin to dry thor-
oughly.
