23 Alternate sites testing
Traditionally, capillary blood for blood glucose testing is taken from the fingertip. You now have the added option of obtaining
capillary blood from other sites such as the palm, forearm, upper arm, or calf. Testing with blood from these alternate sites is
referred to as Alternate Site Testing (AST).
The Accu-Chek Softclix Plus AST Accessory is a special cap (AST cap) that is used with the Accu-Chek Softclix Plus lancing
device and enables you to obtain capillary blood from alternate sites.
Blood from the fingertip can be used at any time to measure blood glucose. If alternate sites are used, there are cer-
tain times when AST testing is not appropriate because of the risk of error. Incorrect results can cause the wrong
therapeutic decision to be taken and so adversely affect your health.
Before you take blood from a site other than the fingertip, please read this chapter so that you can decide which
option is right for you. Please consult your doctor before using alternate sites for blood glucose testing.
Use the AST cap to obtain blood from alternate sites only.
If you use the AST cap to collect blood from a fingertip, the lancet penetrates more deeply than necessary into your
finger. This can be very painful and may cause injury.
Before using the Accu-Chek Softclix Plus AST Accessory, please read the instructions included with your Accu-Chek
Compact Plus blood glucose meter and the Accu-Chek Compact test strips.
The AST cap is intended for patient self-monitoring by a single person. It must not be used to collect blood from more
than one person due to the risk of infection.
