22 Cleaning the devices
22.1 Cleaning the meter
Only a sighted person may clean the meter.
The meter uses an optical measuring method that relies
heavily on all of its components being clean. Because of
the way the test strip works, the meter does not normally
come into direct contact with blood. Regular cleaning is
therefore largely unnecessary. In the rare event of the
meter becoming soiled through improper use, cleaning it
may become necessary (see error message E-5 in
Chapter 21.2).
When the meter is used by a person with vision
loss, it should be checked for soiling weekly by a
sighted person and cleaned if necessary as described below.
For cleaning use only cold water or 70% ethanol. Any other cleaning agents may damage the meter or impair its
measuring function.
