General Overview
A Symmetrix box is composed of a dual internal bus (X and Y buses) on which are
connected Channel Directors (CD), Cache memory cards and Disk Directors (DD).
The Channel Directors manage host links. They are available in two versions which can be
mixed in the same Symmetrix subsystem:
• Ultra Wide SCSI Directors containing 4 host ports
• Fibre Channel Directors containing 2 host ports
The DIsk Directors manage four fast wide SCSI buses to the internal disks. Depending on
the model, either 4 or 6 disks are connected on each internal SCSI bus.
Optionally, Remote Link Directors (RLD) can be plugged to connect two different Symmetrix
boxes in an SRDF configuration which allows to manage mirrored volumes across the two
boxes.
The attachment of a Symmetrix Fast Wide Differential SCSI port on an AIX server is made
using the standard MCA or PCI adapters:
MCA: MSCG020-0000 SCSI-2 F/W DE Enhanced Disk Adapter (WSA)
MSCG012-0000 SCSI-2 F/W DE Ext Disk Adapter (Corvette Turbo)
PCI: MSCG030-0000 Ultra SCSI Differential Disk Adapter on EPC1200/A
MSCG023-0000 Ultra SCSI DE Disk Adapter on EPC400
The attachment of a Fibre Channel port of a Fibre Channel Director to an AIX/PCI server is
made through an EMULEX LP7000E adapter. The LP7000E AIX driver supports the
Symmetrix FC-AL subsystems.
Note: The Symmetrix Fibre Channel port uses a fiber optic connector. So, a fiber optic
cable must be used for the connection to the Symmetrix and an MIA must be
connected to the other end of the cable. The copper side of the MIA is connected to
an Emulex adapter or to a hub port.
