Scotchlite
™
Reflective
Material
Scotchlite reflective
material is designed
for use on safety
garments and
in athletic and casual
wear. When used
properly, Scotchlite
reflective material
helps enhance the
visibility of the wearer
in nighttime or low-light conditions when
illuminated by a light source, such as headlights, by
returning the light back toward the original source and
reaching the automobile driver’s eye. Fluorescent color
fabrics are also available to enhance daytime and low-light
visibility. Scotchlite reflective material is composed of wide
angle, exposed retro-reflective lenses bonded to a durable
cloth backing and are available in home wash and
industrial wash constructions.
Standard ANSI/ISEA 107-2010 defines performance
criteria for high visibility apparel. The standard establishes
three garment classes based on performance
requirements and on the wearer’s activities: 360 degree
visibility, color/luminance, and total area of background
and retro-reflective materials used. ANSI/ISEA 107-2010
class 2 or 3 is required for wearer’s with exposure to traffic
on public roadways.
Garment selection should be based on risk assessment,
which includes complexity of the work environment,
separation of the worker from moving equipment and
vehicles, and additional work variables such as weather.
The table on the left details minimum size requirements
for apparel background material along with contrasting
retro-reflective material bands.
