3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 88 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 88 CHAPTER 5: IMPORTING AND REFRESHING DEVICES Key Concepts Importing This section outlines the key concepts of importing and refreshing. 3Com Network Administrator provides two methods for importing devices from an external source into its inventory. It enables you to import a list of devices from a text file or, alternatively, from HP OpenView.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 89 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM Key Concepts 89 Importing from CSV Files CSV files are simple text files used to specify a set of data. The data is made up of a number of records, with each record corresponding to a line in the file. Each record is made up of a number of fields, where each field is separated by a comma.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 90 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 90 CHAPTER 5: IMPORTING AND REFRESHING DEVICES CSV File Format 3Com Network Administrator expects the content of the CSV file to obey certain rules as follows: ■ Each record (device) should be on a separate line. ■ White space at the start and end of a field is ignored. ■ If an optional field is omitted within the middle of a line, the commas surrounding it must be present.

3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 153 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 8 Overview PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC This chapter describes how 3Com Network Administrator can be used to prioritize network traffic on the 3Com devices on your network. By enabling prioritization, you can specify the importance of certain types of network traffic (such as traffic to and from database servers or NBX phone traffic) over others.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 154 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 154 CHAPTER 8: PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC Key Concepts Traffic prioritization has three basic aims: ■ To ensure that traffic defined as being more important flows through the network quicker than other types of traffic. ■ To ensure that important traffic is less likely to be dropped if there is congestion on the network. ■ To prevent traffic that has been blocked from flowing on the network.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 155 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM Key Concepts 155 Classification is configured on a device as a set of rules. Each rule defines a particular way of identifying the type of traffic. For example, a rule may state that SNMP traffic can be identified as UDP packets that have either the source or the destination UDP port set to the value 161.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 156 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 156 CHAPTER 8: PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC As these standards each define a single field in which to store the marking, it means that simple classification devices can still be used as part of a network-wide traffic prioritization solution provided that the following conditions are met: ■ Simple classification devices must be able to classify on the user priority field, the DiffServ field or both.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 157 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM Key Concepts 157 The boundary nodes (shown in the Topology example) are complex classification devices and can perform the appropriate marking of packets. This means that any interior nodes that are simple classification devices are still able to determine the correct traffic prioritization to perform.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 158 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 158 CHAPTER 8: PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC The example illustrates what happens when a device receives a set of packets of different types that are destined for the same port: ■ The queuing mechanism takes the packets (which are received in no particular order) and, based upon whether they were classified as gold, silver or bronze, places them in the gold, silver or bronze queue.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 159 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM Key Concepts 159 Dropping The action of dropping allows the device to prevent blocked traffic from flowing on the network. This is achieved by discarding (dropping) packets that are identified via classification as traffic that should be blocked. Service Levels The overall set of actions that are performed as a result of a particular classification are commonly known as a service level.
3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 160 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 160 CHAPTER 8: PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC Service levels enable easy identification of end-to-end treatment of traffic. If the example was to be configured appropriately on the devices throughout the network, it would be possible to say that database traffic is treated as business critical throughout the network.

3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 164 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM 164 CHAPTER 8: PRIORITIZING NETWORK TRAFFIC 3Com Network Administrator configures devices that are capable of classifying traffic based upon IP addresses to identify traffic going to or from a server selected for prioritization. This is achieved by creating classifier rules that match packets with either the destination or source IP address respectively set to the IP address of the server.

3Com Network Administrator for HP OpenView.book Page 189 Wednesday, November 12, 2003 2:33 PM Key Considerations 189 CAUTION: Many TCP and UDP based applications use dynamic port assignment to determine the TCP or UDP port that will be used as the source port. If your application definition contains a classifier for a TCP or UDP port that falls within a range that one or more of your devices may dynamically allocate to an application it could cause intermittent problems on your network.
